Chicago’s harbor expanded beyond its 1832 lighthouse. Buildings blocked over 45% of its intended light arc. On July 9, 1859, a new skeletal iron lighthouse began guiding ships at North Pier.

See the historic plans and engraving.

For the Chicago Fire anniversary, we jump ahead to a different lighthouse, the 1859 North Pier light. In 1871, danger came from land. Refugees found “the kindest reception and hospitality” there; the Magnolia ferried survivors west. #ChicagoHarborLighthouse #SaveTheLighthouse

Chicago’s first lighthouse opened in 1832. By 1844, Congress had appropriated nearly $248,000 to improve the harbor.

We highlighted the lighthouse on this 1839 map. Look at the new entrance. See the problem? Comment below.

Last week: the lamps. This week: the keeper.

Chicago’s early lighthouse used whale-oil lamps. In 1835, keepers tended lights from sunset to sunrise and trimmed wicks every 4 hours.

No switch. No automation. Someone had to keep the light.
