Hopeless lesbians go on a first date in WIP3

#QueerWriters #WritingPrompts #FLBC #SapphicWriters #WritingCommunity #sapphicauthors #LesFic

“God, why is this so hard?”
Clara chuckled softly. “I don’t know. But you’re not alone there,” Clara said. “I’ve been nervous all week.”
“You have?”
“Absolutely.” Clara nodded. “But then I saw how nervous you were and decided we both couldn’t be nervous wrecks.”
“So what do we do to get over this awkwardness?” Beverly asked.
“How about you just treat me like any of your other dates.”
“But you’re not like any of my other dates,” Beverly said quietly.
“How am I different exactly?”
“Because none of those other women mattered,” Beverly met Clara’s gaze.

Cèilidh is afraid of the nei.

#QueerWriters #WritingPrompts #FLBC #SapphicWriters #WritingCommunity #sapphicauthors #WriteSky

“I went on a date with a man yesterday,” Liv said lightly. “He needs to convince his work friends he is straight. He is not. But I wore my prettiest dress and pretended.” She shrugged. “He was not terrible at kissing, but his beard was scratchy, and he lacked the softness of ei dame.”
Cèilidh laughed despite herself.
“You are still upset,” Liv said gently. “Do not be. It is not so merkelig for women like us to date men. Many in this room are married because they must be.”
“I know,” Cèilidh said. “And I know she feels pressured by her parents when it comes to her romantic life.” She rapped her knuckles lightly against the bar and looked sideways at Liv. “That doesn’t mean it didn’t sting.”
“But you are sitting here instead of dancing with her. Why?”
Cèilidh sighed. “That is a very valid question, my venn—did I say that right?”
Liv’s face lit up. “Ja. Veldig bra.” She studied Cèilidh a moment. “You are afraid of the nei?”
“Yes,” Cèilidh admitted. “I’m afraid of the nei.”
“I do not believe she will say nei,” Liv said. “But even if she does, at least you would know. You could let your heart heal and move on.” She lifted her glass. “And if you require assistance meeting ladies, I will help you. I am quite skilled at it.”

“How were the sticks, Liv? Meet any cowgirls?”
Liv’s eyes widened. “I met a ku,” she blurted. “She ate…grass.”
Beverly shook her head. “Okay.”
Everyone was watching Liv now. Her leg bounced like she’d finished an entire carafe of coffee herself.
“Nothing happened,” she said, returning everyone’s glances. Stella bit back a smile and patted her thigh, trying to still Liv’s bouncing leg.
“We didn’t really interact with anyone,” Stella offered. “But those we did meet were pleasant and welcoming.”
Beverly’s eyes sparkled. “On that note, I’m unwelcoming you. I’ve got work in the morning, and you all are infringing on my sleep.” She stood up and gestured for them to leave.

The wind picked up and rustled the bare branches of the neighbour’s tree. Jacqueline glanced around the neighbourhood again. At the end of the road, a group of children were playing street hockey. They were far enough away that they were more sound than sight, only the slap of the ball and the hacking of the sticks on asphalt announced what they were doing. That, and the private shame of knowing she had interrupted their game twice while driving around the neighbourhood searching for her courage. It had only been after the first pass that she’d realized the street was a dead end.

An idea flickered across her face, and her expression brightened. “What are you doing later tonight? I’m finished at five.”
Jacqueline’s face softened, edged with disappointment. “I’m in the studio until ten tonight.”
“Oh. Musicians-only territory?”
“Well, no,” Jacqueline said. “But it’s not nearly as exciting as most people think. It’s painfully dull, actually.”

Instead, she celebrated with her family. They watched A League of Their Own. The baseball movie felt like a safe compromise for Tim and her dad, especially with the Blue Jays making their first World Series appearance. They ate pizza and her grandmother made a devil’s food cake. When Izzy asked what that was, her grandmother merely replied, “C’est juste plus chocolaté.”

Shannon's having a moment.

Then Jacqueline’s first notes rang through the room, beginning in a rich, smoky contralto before rising into a warm, silvery mezzo. The voice Shannon knew from records suddenly felt different—more unguarded, more alive than she’d ever imagined, carrying a confidence that seemed effortless.
Shannon’s breath caught. Every muscle, every synapse, every tiny hair on her body snapped to attention.
Her focus narrowed until there was only Jacqueline, her guitar, and Shannon herself. When Jacqueline’s gaze found hers, something inside Shannon’s chest shifted. She knew it was only a look, but for one impossible moment, she imagined Jacqueline was singing just for her.
When the song ended, a quiet round of applause filled the room. At least she thought it did. Their hands were moving, but she couldn’t hear anything over the pounding of her pulse.

Julie arrived just before nine with two cups of coffee and a tired smile. She handed one to Izzy and then stared incredulously at the handwritten directions and fuzzy map printout.
"Hey, so why don't we use my GPS? I brought it from LA"
"I've never used one before," Izzy admitted.
"It's easy," Julie said, already retrieving it from the car. "You punch in the destination, and it tells you where to go. Like magic---except bossier."

“It’s a big change. Are you ready for this?” she asked, giving Izzy one last chance to change her mind.
Izzy caught the woman’s eyes in the mirror. “Yeah,” she said. “It’s time.”
Before she knew it, her hair was pulled into a ponytail, braided, and tied off. A few quick snips later, it was gone, dropped into a resealable bag ready for donation.
“Now,” the hairdresser said, “let’s talk about style. You don’t have much left to work with. Any ideas about what you want?”
Izzy hadn’t thought that far ahead. The plan had always been to cut it off. She never gave any thought to what came after.
“I don’t know,” she said finally. “Just…make me look cool?”

When seven-year-old Isabell asked how planes fly, Andrea Brewer decided she needed a better answer than “engines and wings.” So she explained the theory of flight by comparing airflow to children fleeing from a classroom to the playground. Isabell still thought it was a good comparison, though she hadn’t known at seven that communal, mostly unsupervised spaces like playgrounds could be high-pressure places too.

By the time it ended, she’d found a spot overlooking the lake and pulled over. For reasons she’d never quite understood, Lake Ontario had always brought her a sense of calm. Right now, she needed some of that serenity to plan their next steps.
She put the car in park and waited.
At first, neither of them spoke, both staring out at the foreboding lake. Jacqueline lost herself in its enormity, watching the dark grey waters stretch seemingly to the horizon.

Shannon rolled her shoulders and looked down the street for the bus. A flash of colour on the snowy sidewalk caught her eye. A bouquet of lavender roses lay discarded on the ground. She didn’t understand how someone could be so careless with something that took so much thought.
As she stared at them, their petals broken and slowly scattering on the wind, she wondered what it would feel like to be the person someone bought flowers for—then immediately felt foolish at the thought.

Shannon caught the briefest flash of annoyance on Jacqueline’s face before it vanished behind her polished mask. If Shannon had blinked, she would’ve missed it.
“No, sorry—this is my cousin Cecilia from Montreal,” she answered before Jacqueline could.
Jacqueline blinked, then, like a chameleon, changed her expression again. She turned to the man, her brow furrowed. “Je suis désolée. Je ne parle pas très bien anglais. Qu’est-ce que vous avez dit?” To Shannon’s ear, the French accent sounded flawless.
“Oh. Excusez-moi,” he said with a thick accent. He turned to Shannon as the official translator. “She looks remarkably like the singer Jacqueline Lamont.”
“Oui, merci. Bonne journée. Je n’ai pas envi de vous parler, celui-là. Que la foule est fatigante se soir!” Jacqueline added, biting back a laugh.
Shannon’s eyebrows rose. “She gets that a lot.”

The night before, Jacqueline had started moving Mary’s bedroom to the first floor. Rebecca had refused to help, and Jacqueline had no one else to ask. When she tried to move her mother’s bed frame, her hand caught and twisted, sending white-hot pain through her arm. She’d hissed an expletive, and the taste of soap in her mouth from the last time she’d sworn in her mother’s house came rushing back as a memory she’d sooner forget. She abandoned the attempt, deciding to try again the next day.

For a moment, it looked like Izzy was finally letting her guard down. Maybe she believed her. Maybe this was the first step towards repairing what Julie had broken. A flicker of something warm and familiar appeared in Izzy’s eyes.
“Julie…” Izzy began.
The soft, unguarded way she said her name made Julie’s heart and hopes lift.
Then it was gone. Izzy blinked, then straightened, and the warmth vanished, leaving only a cold emotional distance.
Julie felt the words before they were spoken, and her heart sank.
Izzy shook her head. “I don’t think so.” Her eyes lingered for a heartbeat too long before she turned away and continued packing her bag.
