An old poem about not looking forward to something, even though it's for the best.

#poetry #rkfinch

tonight; this ache

tonight
encumbered by this ache
refusing to believe
what in the coming hours
will force its clarity upon me
i do not accept what is going down
but i'm also the author of that voice
reminding me i have no choice
i'm not a little short of logic
yet in its wake i only frown
now i do not seek forgiveness
and i do not wish
i'd played another hand
i don't want it to continue
i agree it may have ended tasting bland
i may accept that time
it had no answers
a whispered accompaniment
to the passing sand
now i've gotten through today
and i'm intact
a great deal of me is genuine
but there is a part
that is an act
i felt your name upon my tongue
so many times i could chew it
it distracts me from my other drive
and some days i feel i'll never do it
too much credit to my charms
while little's spent on my dismay
and now i must move forward
to soon look back
and know i slew it
i'm waiting for the bell
that marks the death of my delay.

🌱 Yeah.

#poetry #rkfinch

yeah.

ever since humanity
has lost its way
knowing everything and nothing
that was ever on any record
those who mimic a moral sway
have rebranded
as some sort of shepherd
with the tagline
"less talk, more flock!"
and the crowds are still standing in line
the kids who once arrived there
now both over- and under- grown
are doing exactly what we taught them
which is why we're all in ruin
fed a diet of resentment
full of idless egos and blame for all
from any but their generation
lamenting those who grow rich
exploiting loopholes in the system
not from disagreement
but only because they're not yet them
while it's said the rot starts at the head
we seldom remember the rest
is that it gets worse as it settles
extremities nearly always
require amputation
organs can't provide compensation
the experience of life
becomes an unpleasant mission
and the body ends up mutilated
useless
and eventually dead.
yeah.
thank god it was worth it.

I wrote this in 2003. Unbeknownst to me at the time, #EpsteinIsland was 1998-2019. Maniacs have run rampant for too long, have far too much power, and bear too little responsibility. #ReleaseTheFiles

#poetry #rkfinch

maniac

he's been thinking about it
every single second
for almost ten years
drinking in the dark bouquet
of sinful stills
relishing in the childish echoes
always ringing in his ears
he's bestowed himself the title,
Master,
The One Who Conquers Tiny Wills...
<< and his gleeful mind repeats this song
          until it finally comes upon
          his demented hard-on >>
as one who couples with a drug
his buzz wears off
soon he'll be hunting for a fix
he battles through its fading half-life
he fights a nagging cough
while he digs around inside his bag of tricks
he knows exactly where to go
and how to do it
he found his target long ago
he'll help her through it
excitement grows as he dreams of the hours
in which he'll be able to keep her
he justifies pain so she might know his power
extending the claw of a paternal grim reaper
he thinks, This is Okay,
some people are just made this way
and he says he's never going to change
because he's never going to change...
he thinks about it
every single second
for years and years and years
that's why he'll never lose the details;
that's why his gleeful mind repeats this song.
such strumming always comes upon
his demented hard-on.

An old poem. I really did love that chair.

#poetry #rkfinch

at least i finally have this chair

said a goodbye
was sort of tender
there's nothing left to know
to destiny
i must surrender
waiting for a sign
that you are mine
scraps of all that i was after
ignore how much i care
at least i finally have this armchair
too old to cry
still on this bender
with nothing left to show
to save myself
i must remember
if this were such a sign
we'd transcend time
you placed your hand upon my rafter
because you sensed you might just care
i know it, told so in this armchair.

🌱 Indeed.

#poetry #rkfinch

silly old me

and here i've been all this time
thinking honesty was a desirable trait
to quote my great, late father:
well, silly old me
all these wasted years of hoping
that being kind would guide my fate
i guess you're not supposed to bother
if you're not overcharging a fee
and some would say
the lesson is
that i need to learn
to take it
but their intentions are naked
and i didn't just read
the golden rule:
i ate it
so i start treading water
disinclined to look down
while the place is getting hotter
and our lives are being traded
for a useless piece of fodder
alors, pardon mon français
mais, je t'emmerde -
i'm not ever going to 'take it'
i haven't even gotten started.

This is quite an old one.

#poetry #rkfinch

for all the standby flagpoles

i guess i'm glad that i saw you
one good thing to rest my eyes upon
there are a million reasons i should move on now
but i'm still standing
because this is so wrong
so i prayed for light to shine down on me
and illuminate my gloom
but it did nothing but accentuate
a thousand bloody pricks
then danger rose so quick
my eyes have put their other shades on
for all the standby flagpoles
there's no longer any room
what i had wanted was to just sit and gaze
i do not want these complications
i do not want these symptoms
and i may be less of me without them.

🌱 I think about words a lot. I love them.

#poetry #rkfinch

razzle-dazzle

sometimes i think it's amazing
that humans as a species
absolutely require
more than one word for things
our thoughts can't be bound
by a single descriptor
for a variety of possible situations
stories, postures, or pictures
one word just isn't enough
for the uniqueness of our experiences.
i'm not simply tired, not me!
i'm exhausted, drained, and weary
maybe a little bit sleepy
but i may not yet be
beaten, dead, or done, you see
just knackered, worn, logy, and fatigued
not anything like you
who's overworked, sapped, and right burned-out
my drowsiness is more low-brow
and neither of us resemble
that person with the extra tremble
sorely lacking obvious frazzle
due in part to either
their razzle or their dazzle
and to group us all together
would be to simply misassemble.

🌱 I've been wanting to write this poem for a while.

#poetry #rkfinch #greyrock

life on gray rock

i spell it with an 'a' because
the edges are supposed to be softer here
and it's true
they can't get through
but i hate it
tiny little prison cell
where the bars are a one-sided veil
and my view is fine
while they can't tell
exactly what i'm seeing
and they'll never know
how i feel about it.
they are hungry
starving for energy
and i am a smorgasbord
for these sorts of entities
so i cut off their power supply at the source
they'll hit a bit harder for a while, of course
and i'll try to keep that veil down
but occasionally
whether out of force or just clarity
i will at some point react
and like the lure of blood
preceding an imminent shark attack
i almost never escape wound-free
but i consider it lucky
when i can get them out
and remain intact enough
to still recognize me.

🌱 Brand new. Real-time advice from my strong self to my broken self.

#poetry #rkfinch

the long game

i know you're feeling the things
but keep it on the down-low
it's not the you-show anymore
everybody's in this free-flow
and most of them don't even know
they went through the door
much less that it permanently closed
behind them
i know the things are crushing
but remember the long game
think of all that is at stake
like the passion behind the flame
the engine powering the train
the water feeding the lake
take comfort that you're conditioned
to being thirsty
i know you think you're getting the message
but i want you to pretend you're not
because i don't trust the voice that's sending it
and i don't want you to get caught
in something you lose because
you gave up before you fought
i want to see you living
i want to see your light
so ignore your proliferant hydric soul
that in encountering a dent
discharges ceaseless effluent
don't waste a thought on that at all
you just keep walking fast
and standing tall.

I'm sort of feeling this today, though I wrote it long ago.

#poetry #rkfinch

the room

oh my darling dear
it's dark in here
and i try to block the words that drift over
from places near to me
i arrived in a state close to happy
but there is a rift
in which i want to die
perhaps the excess weight to my left
will get me running
to claw my way out from your ignorant cleft
would be somewhat stunning
oh, to say goodbye to the life that i live here
for it's not just within; it's all around me
we are an intellectual foundry
no, i cannot stand this dribbling sauce of opinion
oozing down around my eyebrows to my chin
leaving me sticky...
i'm held back behind a wall i commissioned
built by you
and the exits are very tricky
and what started out as bitter
now smells like litter
yes, i believe her highness' ass is smarting
and it's tomorrow i cannot face
the things that keep me lowly
i know this is a part of what you want to show me
i might listen if i were given some space
i know you feel these words i speak
and i know your fear to land upon them
perhaps we could take this on together, slowly...

Another older poem. I think it may be dating itself.

#poetry #rkfinch

lurid trance

i crumpled up what i was beneath
while i looked for my pen
alec baldwin's on the t.v.
and i am an ocean
i am a great sea
a minute beyond me
when you touch me right i sort of purr
but i am not her
all these new meanings
truth so far away from me
these eyes are grey?
our necks are long?
we make you laugh?
okay, then you lost me.
i could maybe change the world
but this elegance i'll never be
this swan-like dance
this lurid trance
i understand why when she left
it knocked you to the floor, but
god, man, i'm not what walked out that door.

This is an old one.

#poetry #rkfinch

somebody left me here

somebody left me here
and i'm trembling
i've been locked out
and i am scared.
the more i come to understand
the less i am able to comprehend.
it is despair and strength
i am tempering
under this armour
i am bare
but no one's ever been there
and it's how i know
there are none who care.
somebody touched me
now i'm tensing...

tonight showed
a shadowy scene
leading up to
some sort of crest
too high for me to see
i caught a brief
glimpse of happiness
but i was too wrapped up in me
to speculate what it might mean
--------an underlying
            sense of madness

i'm not all here
i've taken leave
my heart's gone dry
i cannot grieve
it's soaked right through
my bloody sleeve
while i begged
for something more
some sort of reason
something to wish for
or to believe in
something that could just be there
and love me all the same
not to accuse, ignore, or blame
i'm not all here
but no one would know
for you can't have a thought
for the soul you never sought
and the truth is,
nobody's looking for me.

🌱 Pockets of meaningless existential discomfort are a too-oft part of the human condition, even without external challenges. I find the exercise of articulating it is, if not healing, at least mildly soothing.

#poetry #rkfinch

spine

right back at it again
this door i've closed behind me
so many times before
the inbound jouncing tightness
spreading from my cornerstone
bubbling through my system
via the mysterious mid-tier core
that does not exist
at the junction of
Cochlear Avenue
and Esophageal Lane
just before the northbound exit
to Brain Street
far, far from Oxygen Court
where the Bridge over Bloodlust
is still incomplete.
i was actually born
up north there
gave colour to its quarters
devised a precarious stability
which eventually attracted all
the gentrifying shit-thoughts
that moved in, forged a gate
and labelled the rest of us squatters
the ones they first called artists
now just bodies in the gutters
watching me, laughing
as i fell apart, and moved
my fine, battered, sorry ass
into the privacy of the heart.
but heart also doesn't want me here
it's too sweet for savoury
so it's drowning in my tears
it says my salinized shell
corrodes its parts, clogs its gears
and makes life a living hell.
i'm told to find myself another nexus
like the liver or the solar plexus
someplace edified by toxic grime
and sensitive neural involutions
not unlike mine
but they don't want me either.

so i moved into the spine.

🌱 A recent poem.

#poetry #rkfinch

deadbeat

your god is a deadbeat dad
and if he ever shows up again
he'll be feeling pretty bad
might even get arrested
so he better have cash
and a man who abandons his lad
is the one
who should be asking for forgiveness
since after all it's his law.

your god is a deadbeat dad
he went for smokes
at the confectionery
the day before the quaternary
and left his children struggling
didn't even stay to see some born
this guy is dreadfully sad
if you're looking to be inspired,
because life is not binary
and pain is not a flaw.

your god is a deadbeat dad
and it is absolutely okay
to have no father at all.

#poetry #rkfinch

a call in the woods

don't you know what it's for?
didn't you lie there and watch?
can't we start this again?
so much is over
have we nothing to gain?
don't you see that i'm not?
am i responsible for everything?
but, silence
i am whispering words to a stranger
beckoning a phantom
to come meet me here
i pray for our minds to awaken
and start calling to me
'cause there is no way this can go on
the ache in my heart has spread
and i suddenly remember
these warnings did promise to punish me
if i did not take heed
and i have failed, indeed.
all of my cries have been washed away
drowned out by legitimate suffering
drowned out by commerce and bustling
bouncing around in a closed, deaf world
and like fingers tearing at my flesh
ripping open half my chest
the stories that i have are sad
deserving nothing, outdone by little girls
there is not enough left to convince myself
that self-imposed encouragement is real
for if i fall down in the woods and no one can hear my call
did i ever exist at all?

This is an old poem, many thousands of days ago now...

#poetry #rkfinch

these days are numbered

it's day ten thousand, three hundred,
     and twenty-seven
and i'm no closer to it
we are no better off then
i am no longer whole
back on day four thousand, six hundred,
     and seventy-five
i was much more alive
but i can't go back in time
and apply what i know
i have put energy out there
i risked being the fool, and did not lie
i wished for a resolute ending
never, now it's nothing, naught or nigh
it was always meant to be
i know it still
it may never come to pass
this may occur against my will
now quiet, listen,
and i'll cry for you.

#poetry #rkfinch

a new ROI

on a conference call with my former life
and the bullshittery is rife
with brand new bullshit
so strange from the outside
to hear all the things
that for three decades
feasted daily on my soul
proving further to me
that everything
i observed
and from which i ran screaming
was not only accurate
but impossible to hide
and since they don't know i'm listening
their team trained in gaslighting
has not been deployed

they were the cause of everything
all the aspects of the world
that are crumbling to ruin
and they still are
the only difference is
they are worse than ever, and
i'm not there anymore
because it was a fight every day
unwinnable in every way
a slave in an environment
where common sense is a punishable offense
and empathy is a death sentence
i have finally stopped listening
and am now only investing
in returns of peace and joy.

This poem is quite old. It also originally came with a melody.

#poetry #rkfinch

after the day before

the sun has washed a kiss
upon my forehead
and even in this time of strain
i know things will erect themselves
a promise
from a source of complication
if given one more change
i know i can correct myself
i'll bear this feeling
and ignore its fiendish passion
i know i'll manage through
the darkened winter nights
i'll build a wall that's tantamount
to overcoming pain
i'll be industrious despite the cold
and find myself again
i'm surprised by how this theatre can bore me
the vast extremes to which its characters
feel so compelled to play
embroiled in yet another conversation
that eats the time away
here ends another day...

#poetry #rkfinch

oasis

sometime ago
stumbling cross-eyed and slow
walking away from a moment sublime
there's no time for us here
and now it's all soaking wet
so that i'll never forget
what is precious and fertile
like a smile and a tear.
no matter,
consequence lives in my home
and it chatters
i'm blurry because sleep can't be had
on its own
now i wonder a while
if the visions in my head
are what really lies ahead
watching beauty erupt
from the stench of my pain
of course i will see you again
i can already.
