"The Richelieu River is a waterway in Quebec (Canada) that connects Lake Champlain to the St. Lawrence River.
It originates in Lake Champlain and flows into the St. Lawrence River at Sorel-Tracy (near Lake Saint-Pierre).
It is approximately 124 to 130 kilometers long.
Its course is generally divided into two sections:
• The Upper Richelieu (to the south): flows through municipalities such as Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Iberville, Chambly, Beloeil, and Mont-Saint-Hilaire.
• The Lower Richelieu (to the north): flows through localities such as Saint-Charles-sur-Richelieu, Saint-Denis-sur-Richelieu, and Saint-Ours before reaching Sorel.
Formerly known as the Iroquois River, Chambly River, or Ziroko River, it was named in honor of Cardinal Richelieu."
