October 15, 1984 - While the Blazer players were dispatching the Los Angeles Clippers in a preseason game in Eugene, the front office and Jim Paxson ended their summer long negotiations with a new contract.

Paxson and the Blazers agreed to a six-year contract that put the two-time All-Star in a "fancy neighborhood" according to Harry Glickman. "I'm very happy," said Paxson. While neither would comment on the total amount, the deal reportedly paid him on par with Mychal Thompson and Sam Bowie.

The two sides did not wait for an NBA decision regarding whether a free agent contract offer from the New York Knicks worth a reported $5 to 6 million total did not violate the NBA salary cap.

After the press conference announcing the signing, Paxson joined the Blazers, as a spectator, in Mac Court on the campus of the Univ. of Oregon. he watched his teammates defeat the Clippers 105-97. Peter Verhoeven and rookie Jerome Kersey each score 19 points and combined for 17 rebounds. Clyde Drexler added 18 points, 6 rebounds, 6 assists, and 3 steals.

October 14, 2009 - The Blazers kicked off their 40th year celebration by returning to the Memorial Coliseum in a "throwback" game, that included Bill Schonely behind the mike for the second half of a preseason loss to the Phoenix Suns.

Andre Miller led the Blazers with 25 points, while LaMarcus Aldridge added 20. Greg Oden scored 17 points, grabbed 13 rebounds and blocked 3 shots.

Schonely was originally to broadcast only the third quarter of the game, but the Blazers current voice, Brian Wheeler, insisted Schonely call the second half. The game also featured the debut of the Blazers newest alternate uniform, with "rose city" across the chest in lower case writing, similar to the early Portland uniforms.

Tom Owens led the way, scoring 27 points, with Ron Brewer adding 25 points. Brewer connected on the first three-point field goal in team history. Kermit Washington pulled down 12 rebounds while Larry Steele passed for 11 assists, two shy of his career-best.

The second player Portland selected in the first round of the 1978 NBA Draft, Ron Brewer led Arkansas to the 1978 Final Four before turning before entering the draft. A 6’-4” shooting guard, Brewer became the first Blazer to make a three-point field goal when the NBA adopted the rule 1979. A spot-starter in his rookie season, Brewer became a full-time starter in year two, averaging 15.7 points. Brewer was traded to the San Antonio Spurs in 1980, after playing 192 games.

Originally slated to attend Kentucky, Shaedon Sharpe instead declared for the 2022 NBA Draft, and was selected by the Blazers. In his four seasons in Portland, the 6’-5” shooting guard has doubled his scoring, jumping from 9.9 during his rookie year to 20.8 during the 2025/26 season.

After being on back-to-back NCAA Title teams with the Univ. of Connecticut, Donovan Clingan declared for the 2024 NBA Draft, forgoing his final two years at UConn. In a game on Feb. 12, 2025, the 7’-2” center grabbed a then career-high 20 rebounds, becoming only the sixth Blazer rookie to grab 20 rebounds in a game. Entering his third season, Clingan is coming off averages of 12.1 points and 11.6 rebounds.

October 13, 1977 - Kareem Abdul-Jabbar connected on two free throws with five seconds remaining to secure a 103-102 preseason victory over the Blazers in the night-cap of a twin-bill at the Fabulous Forum.

Portland coach Jack Ramsay wondered why Abdul-Jabbar was even in the game after taking a swing at Blazers center Tom Owens with under three minutes remaining. No foul was called, but Ramsay questioned that in post-game comments, saying, "He swung. It's in the rules." Abdul-Jabbar finished with 16 points, as did newcomer Lou Hudson.

For Portland, Lionel Hollins scored a game-high 18 points and Dave Twardzik added 16. Owens nearly had a triple-double before fouling out, finishing with 13 points, 9 rebounds, and 8 assists.
