I am increasingly interested in one question:
What should every researcher be able to do, regardless of field?
Not every researcher uses the same instruments or methods.
But questioning, explaining, recording, discussing, and revising may be universal skills.
One of the hardest things to teach in research is judgment.
When should we repeat an experiment?
When is a strange result worth following?
When is there enough evidence to change direction?
These decisions are part of research expertise.
Asking for help is a research skill.
Ask too early, and you may hand your thinking to someone else.
Ask too late, and you may lose days or weeks.
The difficult skill is knowing when you have thought enough to ask a useful question.
Research experience does not always mean learning the same way of doing research.
Different labs teach different standards for notebooks, data, discussion, failure, and decision-making.
Maybe “research culture” is part of research education too.
