Jarrod Bleijie has dismissed World Rowing’s claim that Rockhampton’s Games venue remains unapproved, calling the international body’s president’s comments mere ‘commentary’. World Rowing’s declaration Rockhampton has not been approved as an Olympic venue has been dismissed by Deputy Premier Jarrod Bleijie as ‘commentary’. Premier David Crisafulli’s claim the venue has been “signed, sealed and delivered” has, as previously reported exclusively by The Courier-Mail, been contradicted by World Rowing and the federal government. Mr Bleijie denied the government had misrepresented World Rowing’s stance on the Rockhampton rowing venue. “I think commentary will come from time to time,” Mr Bleijie said. “(Rolland’s) opinion was in the press release signing off on it.” World Rowing was surprised by the government’s claim the venue had been “locked in” and released a joint statement with Paddle Worldwide, Rowing Australia and Paddle Australia to note the venue could deliver fair and consistent racing “under the conditions assessed”. The Courier-Mail revealed World Rowing remained concerned about the risk of flooding and had requested more information from the government, which it had not provided.Mr Bleijie said the risk of flooding was a hypothetical. “For goodness sake, in Paris the river was unsafe and contaminated so they pushed back like two days of the swimming event,” he said. “Tahiti was the surfing event, you know, not too close to Paris. “The technical assessment for that time of year for rowing on the Fitzroy River has been signed off by the Dutch company, which the International Olympic Committee and the federations use to sign off on those abilities to host that.
