twisting mainly at the waist
and squinting at the closing door

your face
showed neither fear
nor hope shut down
without expression
but your shoulders
shouted your anticipation

when the automatic lock
snicked to your hot relief
turned you invertebrate

but only for a moment

A door to the past

three generations of a family
marked by height as they grew
written on the back of the bathroom door
in paint, sharpie, eyeliner
for more than sixty years
something so simple and so normal
everybody's names together
you don't really think about it much
until it's gone
along with that togetherness
it doesn't feel like a family anymore
maybe they should have left that door alone

Our Old Wooden Door

6 stanzas of varying length.

Text as follows :

We had a porch door once
that stuck
and squeaked
the lock didn’t work properly
you had to wiggle the key.

We blamed that door
for everything -
getting soaked,
dropping the shopping,
not getting indoors quickly
enough when you needed a pee.

Turns out it wasn’t the door at all
it was the plane tree
sending out roots,
disturbing foundations
doing its best to live and be free.

That old wooden doors’ issues
were a symptom
of something bigger,
a problem down deep.

We replaced it with a new PVC model
when the underpinning was done
laid wood to rest with its kin
dug up and poisoned
no longer impinging.

The street was never the same
with the plane trees all lopped
the doors were all working
but we lost our leafy green backdrop.
