Dispossessed

With every new trauma
I collected demons.
Beloved pets,
with jaws like bear traps
fingers like syringes.
Whisperers living behind
my ever-grinding teeth.
Each a friend
a reward for survival.

I tried to nurture, protect.
Even as they tore at me
I loved them.

But they couldn’t hold on.
They quit me.
Packed up their rust-bitten tools
and departed,
leaving claw marks in my frame
to let me know
this wasn’t mercy.
It was surrender.

The feasting ceased.
No gnawing at my sleep.
Suckling my shame.
The honey from the hive
became unpalatable.

A mind
changeable as a child’s nightmare.
A voice
chanting riddles they couldn’t decipher.
A face
laughing too loud in the dark.
A soul
crying in octaves they couldn’t catch.

Too much static.
Too much noise.
Too much.

I know they did their best.
Tried to ride the cyclone,
but I spun too fast,
burned too fiercely.

They slipped, skidded,
fell behind.

Now they’re gone.
The thunder of retreat
lingers in the silent isolation.
Clean as bone.

I sit in the wreckage
they helped me build,
tasting the unshared air
and smile.

Even demons have thresholds.
I crossed them
and kept walking.
