For #FrescoFriday, this wall of #fresco in the #HouseoftheVettii in #Pompeii shows the phantasmagorical #architecture of the late Fourth Style. Though relatively small, this ala or wing off the peristyle was cleverly enlarged by different planes of painted illusion. #AncientBluesky 🏺

FRESCO FROM THE HOUSE OF THE VETTII, 62-79 CE. POMPEII

A brilliant example of late Fourth Style painted illusion designed to artificially expand a small space. The artists relied on clever visual tricks and a top-to-bottom progression from light to dark. At the pinnacle, a bright white background serves as the sky behind spindly fictive architecture. Below this, three large yellow-ochre panels dominate the middle ground, their borders subtly curved to suggest luxurious draperies stretched tightly across the void. Behind the lower halves of these faux cloths sits a solid wall of rich red cinnabar, while the lowest register grounds the composition with a heavy black dado decorated with reeds. By layering these elements, the painters successfully push the physical boundaries of the room back into a deep illusory space. In the centre, a tiny vignette grounds us with a peaceful scene of xenia, featuring domestic poultry pecking near a small stepped altar.

In fact a false door, painted to left of tablinum, in house of local #Pompeii official C. Giulius Polybius w early style facade.
As in recent discoveries in the city, owner was in process of upgrading 2C BC property, hence amphorae + heap of lime piled in the corner.

A painted door, included in the layout of the tablinium for symmetry. It's actually plaster, showing four panels within a red and white doorframe.
The four panels have the appearance of being on two doors, white with red borders bounded by darker outlines, and three circles on the section dividing upper and lower panels on each one.
A heap of building material and some broken amphorae are shown to the left of the false door.
