@kill-bait.bsky.socialen.killbait.comRepublican Candidate Faces Scrutiny Over Child Labor Violations and Workplace Safety ConcernsA Republican candidate running for the U.S. House in Washington's 3rd District is under scrutiny for his family-owned company's labor practices, including child labor violations and workplace safety issues. John Braun, a state senator challenging Democratic incumbent Marie Gluesenkamp Perez, is president of Braun Northwest, a company founded by his parents 40 years ago. According to the Washington Post, state regulators fined the company over $2,000 last year for three child labor violations involving two teenage apprentices. One 17-year-old apprentice was injured when her glove got caught in a drill press, which state rules prohibit minors from operating without a barrier guard. Another teen was using a hammer drill to install outlets in ambulances, and a third youth was allowed to work more than eight-hour days seven times during a week off from school. Colten Keller, a former employee who worked at the company from 2023 to 2025, reported safety concerns before his father, Karl Keller II, was killed on the job in August 2024. OSHA records indicate that Karl Keller was beneath a finished ambulance when a coworker accidentally drove the vehicle over him. Keller stated that company leadership focused on safety within their departments but adopted a 'not my monkey, not my circus' attitude when issues arose elsewhere. Keller left the company in May 2025 after repeatedly requesting not to work with the employee responsible for his father's death. He later appeared in a campaign ad for Gluesenkamp Perez, stating that Braun 'never called' after his father's death. Braun claimed he spoke to Keller twice the day of the incident, provided paid time off, and delivered a homemade meal. A former welder who left in 2013 described safety practices as 'pretty lax,' noting workers sometimes stood on pallets hoisted by forklifts to reach high shelves, a practice OSHA warns against. Braun denied this practice occurred, stating the company has no record of penalties for it. He also called the child labor citations an 'anomaly' and described the teen's injury as 'not a particularly serious accident,' adding that the company discontinued its apprenticeship program due to a 'heavy-handed regulatory approach.' The injured teen, now 19, told the Post that the accident was 'nothing but my own fault.' Braun maintained in a recent debate that 'simply doesn't happen,' and that he had 'nothing to be ashamed of in terms of our business record or our safety record.'
