Love is boring and passé, all that old baggage,
the bloody bric-a-brac, the bad, the gothic,
retrograde, obscurantist hum and drum of it
needs to be swept away.

My poetry celebration of Black History Month wouldn't be complete without a poem by the grandfather of Dub Poetry Linton Kwesi Johnson
Performance poetry & rap can trace a line back to this poetry pioneer
when i wrote this poem at 17, i was all over the place with how i acted around him and couldn’t ever control those thoughts entirely since he was my art teacher. i look back now at 27 and ask myself why did i have feelings for someone like him, since he was my mother’s age #poetry #poemoftheday
#poemoftheday is "A Poem Wants You to Be Broken" by Ben Gucciardi
"A poem wants you to be broken
and alone when it finds you,
so it can show you how it sees
your clenched fist opening"
There is something interesting here about the juxtaposition of childhood innocence and the ominous personification of the train.
Alongside this the environmental violence of resource extraction culminating in a litany of felled Guyanese hardwood trees
"Bit by bit, little by little, I'm figuring it out."

The opposites are interesting, beginning with the title.
Repetition, including slight variations, gives the poem a liturgical feel
But in the final few lines there is resilience & resistance against systemic limits on survival – a refusal to be silenced
Fall, leaves, fall; die, flowers, away;
Lengthen night and shorten day;
Every leaf speaks bliss to me
Fluttering from the autumn tree.

As we face a winter of rising prices & fuel costs, how common will this scene be?
The poem's power lies in acute observation & unsentimental tone
How you can be sustained by each other & memories when you have little more than a room of cluttered pasts

Yet what I sowed and what the orchard yields
my brother's sons are gathering stalk and root;
small wonder then my children glean in fields
they have not sown, and feed on bitter fruit.

There are few poets with the audacity or credibility to write this poem
Honestly, I think the poet has sold herself short!
This poem challenges beauty standards, which have often excluded Black women, and replaces them with a more grounded model of beauty
