🌸 Japanese researchers decoded the cyclamen genome: 1.48 billion base pairs, 83% of them repeats.

Shop cyclamen once had almost no scent. Breeding it back took Saitama 21 years. Next goal: finding the scent genes.

🌱 REVIEW 🌱

This work provides an overview of the relationship between sulfur metabolism and autophagy, and explores how sulfur-related redox alterations and nutrient signalling may contribute to metal-induced autophagy - Vanbuel et al.

🔗 doi.org/10.1093/jxb/...

#PlantScience 🧪

Fig. 1 (shortened, full legend in paper): Model depicting sulfur (S) metabolism and its proposed interactions with the autophagy pathway. During primary sulfate metabolism, sulfate is ultimately converted to cysteine, which can give rise to secondary S-containing metabolites. On the other hand, cysteine also plays a crucial role in metal stress responses, serving as a building block for glutathione (GSH), phytochelatins, and metallothioneins that are involved in antioxidant defence and/or metal chelation. The strong production of S-rich metal chelators following exposure to specific metal(loid)s can, in turn, induce a ‘functional S deficiency’ response. Signals from an environmental S deficiency and potentially also from a metal-induced ‘functional S deficiency’ can stimulate autophagy by affecting autophagy-related (ATG) gene expression and/or the response to low sulfur proteins (LSUs) that potentially interact with the autophagy pathway.
