#PersonsDay is complicated.

I’m thankful to those before me who fought for women’s rights…

AND I’m painfully aware that the women Emily Murphy thought should have rights didn’t look like me.

Asian women couldn’t vote until 1948.

Indigenous women couldn’t vote until 1960.

This Day is celebrated in Canada to mark the historic 1929 ruling that legally recognized most women as “persons”. Five women from Alberta—Emily Murphy, Nellie McClung, Louise McKinney, Irene Parlby, and Henrietta Muir Edwards—brought the challenge forward. #PersonsDay 🍁 #WomensHistoryMonth 🇨🇦

Today we mark #PersonsDay to commemorate the day in 1929 when women were finally included in the legal definition of “persons.” This opened the door to women participating in public and political life.
