Book 251:

Songs Of A Dead Dreamer/Grimscribe - Thomas Ligotti 🎧🎶☠️🛌📝💙📚🩸

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2

Steeped in shadow, the occult, and dark cosmic horror, these stories will slide under your skin and start to prickle. Out now from #PenguinClassics & #PenguinAudio with an introduction by Jeff VanderMeer #ThomasLigotti

A 4⭐️ book review for “Songs Of A Dead Dreamer” and “Grimscribe” by Thomas Ligotti from LiteraryLollapalooza.blogspot.com: “I feel I have to preface to say that I decided pretty early into the audiobook that I would later go back and reread the text. That is to say, I was so overwhelmed with riches of language I grew frightened of missing words, phrases, or getting caught on a turn of phrase and losing the thread of plot altogether. So my rating might be 5⭐️, but I can’t be sure yet. Like the dreaded asterisk in baseball stats, I give it a 4.5 with the promise of a return where I can truly revel in the absolute feast of what is two full-sized collections combined into one volume. It’s a bit much. I’m not complaining, but like I said, I became overwhelmed. If you like dark, cerebral, psychological, supernatural tales of horror in the style of Poe and Lovecraft, or if you like modern writers like Nathan Ballingrud, you will like Thomas Ligotti. Steeped in shadow, the occult, and dark cosmic horror, these stories will slide under your skin and start to prickle. Out now from #PenguinClassics & #PenguinAudio with an introduction by Jeff VanderMeer”

Book 217:

Vampires of El Norte - Isabel Cañas 🎧🚺🇲🇽🧛🤠💙📚🩸

⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2

A well-drawn view into Mexican history and culture via the Mexican-American War circa 1840, If you like romantic historical fiction with a supernatural twist, this is a pretty good one at that. Out now from #Berkley & #PenguinAudio.

A 3 1/2⭐️ book review for “Vampires of El Norte” by Isabel Cañas from LiteraryLollapalooza.blogspot.com: “A well-drawn view into Mexican history and culture via the Mexican-American War circa 1840, where a young woman, the daughter of a rancher, on the Texas/Mexico border, must contend with Anglo aggression from the north, as well as a new terror stalking the plains, something sinister feeding on blood in the darkest of nights. Beautiful prose, but it just wasn’t my cup of poison; more romance than horror in my opinion, but the author is very good. If you like romantic historical fiction with a supernatural twist, this is a pretty good one at that. Out now from Berkley & Penguin Audio.” #HispanicHeritageMonth

Book 210:

An Immaculate Deception - Isabela Livino 🎧📱🚺🤰🏻💙📚🩸🖋️

⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2

A debut Gothic Horror Novel set in 1870s Brazil in which a young pregnant woman unravels in her lover’s remote family home. An impressive debut, but it sadly missed the mark on me. Thanks to #NetGalley #DuttonBooks & #PenguinAudio

A 3 1/2⭐️ book review for “An Immaculate Deception” by Isabela Livino from LiteraryLollapalooza.blogspot.com: “A debut Gothic Horror Novel set in 1870s Brazil in which a young pregnant woman finds herself trapped inside her lover’s remote family home. Madalena, recovering from a carriage crash, suffers from paranoia and anxiety, feeling something has changed in her beloved Leandro, now cold and distant. Halfway through the book, the narration switches to that of Leandro, reporting alternate versions of events we’ve seen previously through Madalena’s eyes, revealing a twist that requires one to reconsider all the facts. This is an impressive debut full of slow-burning feminist rage, but overall it missed the mark on me and I was left feeling confused for most of the book. The atmosphere is as close and suffocating as the Brazilian humidity, though, and I look forward to what this young author does next. Thanks to #NetGalley #DuttonBooks & #PenguinAudio. Out September 1.”
