Let's talk about #cat #parasites! Woot!

Toxoplasma is a common #parasite infection spread by contact with #cat feces, which often goes undiagnosed despite the availability of blood tests.

So be careful with your cat liter!

Toxoplasma is a very common parasite spread by cat poop. About one third of the world population is infected, with some estimates closer to one half.

This parasite forms cysts that can be accidentally ingested after contact with contaminated poop. The cysts then hatch in the gut to release several single-celled worm-like bodies. These migrate through tissues where they'll form a new cyst, resulting in inflammation and damage. This includes the brain!

Toxoplasma can spread to the unborn baby and cause miscarriage, so it is recommended pregnant women stay away from the cat litter box.

Immune compromised people can develop severe symptoms.

Otherwise, symptoms tend to be rather mild, so a person could be carrying this parasite and not be aware of their infection.
