One week ago, I had the chance to see another episode of the « 2026 @climatecerege.bsky.social @cerege.bsky.social habilitation defense » series, featuring Irene Schimmelpfennig, and I sure enjoyed her talk.
Congrats Irene! ⛰️ 🏔️ 🧊 👩‍🔬

The photo shows Irene Schimmelpfennig shortly before her habilitation (in French « habilitation à diriger des recherches », HDR) defense, as well as a slide with the title of her HDR thesis and names of her HDR defense committee members.

So #inktober Day 14 is Lady. As the resident artist for dinosaur ladies, I could do anything.. so I did the original Lady Dinosaur, and threw in another record breaker for good measure.

Tyrannosaurus Rex
Sue and Scotty
FMNB PR 2081 and RSM P2523.8

We’ve already covered Tyrannosaurus, but here have the two shining examples of T Rex. Sue is the most complete T Rex ever found, and thought to be the oldest, with modern estimates placing her around 33. Scotty is the largest ever found, estimates to be between 8 and 11 tons, and thought to not be fully grown. They’re however close enough in size that both could feasibly be the largest T Rex ever found. Both survived beatings in life, Sue having broken ribs and several other fractured bones, and Scotty having wounds on his tail, near his eye, and a parasitic infection in his jaw. Despite all of this, the two lived long healthy lives.

While not the traditional definition of flimsy, for #inktober day 13, I did the Tyrant Polar Bear, an animal known from a single bone.. some pretty flimsy evidence, am I right?

I found out that certain ammonite fossils are iridescent and that others turn into natural gemstones (Ammolite), so I thought a concept that sick needed to be made. Species is Cleoniceras.

Most mammals replace their teeth only once. A new, carnivorous, semiaquatic fossil mammal from the Early Cretaceous of China reveals multiple tooth generations, enhancing our understanding of mammal dental evolution, according to a paper in Nature Communications. go.nature.com/4ALPDFx #Paleosky 🧪

A paper in Nature describes the fossil of an early relative of mammals that shares some adaptions seen in the modern platypus, from the Jurassic period of China. The remains shed light on the evolutionary origins of suckling and swallowing. go.nature.com/4zpn0Nc #Paleosky 🧪

I’m not out yet! #inktober Day 7; Panic!

I initially wanted to do something running from Hatzegopteryx as kind of a bit and never end up doing her, but it was a disservice to this massive aerial monster.

#paleoart #paleosky #pterosaur #hatzegopteryx #oc #ocart #ocsky #gijinka

Hatzegopteryx
Hatzi
Hateg Basin Wing

Hatzegopteryx is an azhdarchid pterosaur from the Mediterranean, being found from Hateg Island off of Romania, it was the apex predator of the island, gliding to and from the mainland and snatching up anything small enough to fit in its mouth. It didn’t hunt fish and instead hunted land vertebrates. It’s thought that it could’ve been bigger than Quetzalcoatlus, but more material needs to be found.

Hatzi’s are relentless. I have seen them chasing prey for hours. They will go without sleep, circling prey by gliding on the breeze. They often seem fairly sleep deprived with wide eyes. They’re irritable, and considering their size, that’s a very bad thing. Generally, if an azhdarchid shadow passes over you, hope you weigh enough to not become a target. Even then, they might land and stare down at you. I’ve learned to puff up my chest enough that they generally ignore me.
