Death of a King. #PalacesAndGardens and #LastWords. Earlier this summer King Harald V of Norway passed on. In this room in city hall in Oslo, there were books where visitors could write wishes to the family or thanks to the king. This is the same room used for the Nobel Peace Prize awards.

Text reads: Pinned
Mr. Calvin and Mick
There are many good dogs, but they say you only get one really great dog in your life. Mr. Calvin has been that amazing dog. But we have to say goodbye. He gave us the best 14 years any human could ever ask for.
We will miss him so much.

Belgian Malinois-Labrador mix, often called a "Belgiador," is a high-energy, intelligent, and loyal hybrid, blending the intense work ethic of a Malinois with the friendly, driven nature of a Labrador. They typically weigh 40–80 lbs and require substantial daily mental and physical stimulation to prevent destructive boredom. These dogs are highly trainable, often suiting active owners, search and rescue, or protection roles, but they require consistent, firm, and early training due to their potential for high-drive, protective, or intense behavior.

“The statue is an exact copy of Italian sculptor Vincenzo Consani’s work Victory, which is housed in the Pitti Palace in Florence, Italy. This copy was carved by Carlo Nicoli and arrived in St. Louis in 1886. Garden founder Henry Shaw originally built the small stone structure—known as the "Temple of Victory"—in 1860 as his own intended final resting place using local white limestone.”-racstl.org

This shot was taken at a night event at the Missouri Botanical Gardens. Since this photographer is quite short the statue takes on a menacing appearance, having to look up to get the shot.

An unusual gravestone for #LastWords for today's #PalacesAndGardens. Not too far from William Faulkner's grave is this one, for the woman who cared for the Faulkner children. She began working for the family in 1902. Born into slavery, she lived to be 100 in a cabin by the home. #photography

A white stone on the ground reads, "Callie Barr Clark, 1840-1940, 'Mammy', Her white children bless her."

Here's a perfect one for #October & #Halloween. The tomb of Pope Alexander VII in the Vatican, with a close up view of the famous skeleton representing Death. #Photography

In the ornate St. Peter's Basilica, a massive statuary for Pope Alexander VII, begun by Bernini.
Copied from Wikipedia: "There are six significant figures in the monument. At the apex is Alexander kneeling in prayer. Below him are four female statues representing virtues practiced by the Pontiff. On the foreground is Charity with a child in her arms. To the right of that is Truth, whose foot rests on a globe. More precisely, Truth's foot is placed directly over England and is driving a thorn into it, where Pope Alexander had striven to subdue the growth of Anglicanism. On the second level are Prudence and Justice. These statues were carved in white marble. Most dramatically, below Alexander, the figure of Death is represented in gilded bronze, shrouded in a billowing drapery of Sicilian jasper.[2] He raises an hourglass to symbolize that time has passed. The hourglass is also an artistic symbol of "memento mori" which translates from Latin to "remember you will die". The plinth is in black, as a sign of mourning for the Pope.[2] The expansive billowing drapery of dark Sicilian jasper contrasts dramatically with the still white marble figures."A closer view of the skeleton from the previous picture. It is visible behind the sculpted cloth, with the face of the skull covered.

The ruins of Nunney Castle behind an old cottage in the little village in Somerset. Built in the late 14th century by the De La Mare family, the castle was designed more as a place of luxury and splendour for a very rich man than as a genuine redoubt. Somerset, 15 October 2026.

An above-ground mausoleum is a freestanding architectural structure designed to entomb caskets or urns above the earth rather than in a subterranean grave.

Practical Advantages

• Flood and Soil Protection: Elevated chambers protect remains from high water tables, sandy soils, seasonal flooding, and unstable ground that can shift underground vaults.
• Weather-Protected Visits: Indoor community corridors or sheltered structures allow year-round, dry visits regardless of rain, snow, or frozen winter ground.
• No Vault Requirement: Individual crypts are self-contained concrete or stone structures, eliminating the need to purchase a separate subterranean burial vault.
• Space Efficiency: Multi-story and vertical stacking allow cemeteries to honor thousands of individuals on a small geographic footprint, conserving urban green space.
• Generational Legacy: Private family mausoleums group multi-generational relatives together into a single, permanent monument. An above-ground mausoleum is a freestanding architectural structure designed to entomb caskets or urns above the earth rather than in a subterranean grave.

The Liberty Memorial in Kansas City was dedicated on 11 November 1926 to the memory of those who had served in World War I. It is now part of the National WWI Museum and Memorial (the museum is housed below).

detail of a mummy shroud with a rather modern looking sketch of a lion (?)-headed god or goddess, ptolemaic-roman period, circa 100 bc-100 ad. Unfortunately the museums plate to this piece is not helpful.

Last day of vacation! 😭 Overlooking Boldt Castle is not a bad last outing!

A blue stretch of water between the camera and an island mid-river shows some mild waves and chop. The island has a grey stone castle with reddish-brown conical roofs and at least one visible turret. Another grey stone building on the left at the beach looks to be in disrepair, known as the playhouse. A smaller castle-like building to the right has grey conical roofs and is very close to the water. Trees of all shapes and sizes fill in the spaces between the buildings and the sky is pale blue with wispy clouds.

The image shows a gray granite memorial bench placed in a cemetery plot near a heart-shaped headstone and flat grave markers.• Material: Usually crafted from durable, weather-resistant natural stone such as gray, pink, or black granite.
• Purpose: Serves as both a permanent personal monument or headstone replacement and a functional seating area for visiting family and friends.
• Customization: Often feature sandblasted or laser-etched engravings, including names, dates, epitaphs, or custom artwork.
