Lovely limestone plaque carved with the face of an owl! 🦉❤️

The solemn gaze from across the centuries gives an air of ancient wisdom!

From Egypt, Late Period–Ptolemaic Period, 400–30 BC.

My photo shows a small, roughly square-shaped piece of limestone carved to depict a frontal face of an owl. The owl has large, rounded eyes and a long, pointed beak highlighted with fine diagonal incised lines. The face is outlined by two symmetrical fan-like feather patterns with a raised border around the eyes, cheeks, and beak. Dimensions: Height 10.3 cm x Width 11.1 cm x Depth 2.5 cm This relief represents the ancient Egyptian owl hieroglyph 'm'. The limestone plaque is displayed in a glass case at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

Gliding into the week on #OwlishMonday
🎨 'Esquiador (Viajero)'/Wandering Skier'. Remedios Varo (1960)
"Remedios laughs, but her laughter echoes in another world" (Mexican poet Octavio Paz, 1966)

A figure in a coat of silver and scarlet stockings elegantly places one foot in front of the other. Its hand rests on the head of one of two downy owls that stand at its side. There is a crystal ball at the figure's throat and what may be a version of its face, or a separate entity altogether, puckishly peeping from its crown. All are carried by a magnificent, flame coloured cloak with a high collar and pointed hood. The cloak-vehicle transports all along, leaving ski tracks in the snow. Varo used the Surrealist decalomania technique to achieve the sense of frost and snow scattered across the canvas. All glide through avenues of dark, leafless trees that both contrast with, and complement, the snow scene. The owls add to the mystery and dreamlike atmosphere of this oil on Masonite piecePhoto, no description

'The owl’s head... was made separately and does not directly attach to the backing. Instead, a small copper rod extends from the head into the bird’s body. This would have permitted the head to rotate from side to side when the object was moved.'

Where some one sick is lying,
She comes to say without a doubt,
That that sick one is dying"

Probably my favourite #StFrancis window, by Edward Payne at Didbrook, #Gloucestershire, 1962, showing the saint preaching to a parliament of birds. Lots of loving detail of bird life, including a handsome #OwlishMonday for tomorrow! #StainedGlassSunday
