Healthy skin around the #stoma should not itch, hurt, or look red or darker than your usual skin tone. Preventing irritation is key! Always consult an #ostomy nurse for choosing the right system and handling skin issues early. Any comments?

#Pouchitis is inflammation of an ileal pouch after J-pouch surgery. Symptoms include urgent diarrhea and cramps. Antibiotics help in most cases. It’s often temporary but can become chronic. Anyone with experience? #Jpouch #ostomy #stoma

I met a wonderful Californian through MeetAnOstoMate. After he retired, he moved to Canada, where I sponsored him for permanent residency. The years we've shared since have been truly unforgettable. P. A., 53, Canada (From the MAO Forum)

We are not given a Stoma Encyclopedia when we leave hospital, but we do have this great site and friendly, experienced people.

One-piece pouches combine the skin barrier and pouch, so the whole system is changed at once. Two-piece systems keep them separate, making pouch changes easier while the barrier can remain in place longer. What's your experience?

Freeze mode is holy.I don’t know why the Lord waited until now to show me that the Hebrew words “raphah,” which means “to relax, let go or be idle” and “rapha,” which means “to heal completely and thoroughly or to make entirely whole” are twin roots, especially since I’ve already been going through severe medical trauma for almost 6 1/2 years, but my life will never be the same. Freeze mode isn’t a malfunction, and it isn’t a lack of faith. It is our bodies obeying a biological and spiritual mandate to let go. In the original Hebrew, the call to "be still" in Psalm 46:10 comes from the word raphah—which literally means to slacken your grip, drop your hands, or let go of your weapons because the war has been too long. Intimately tied to this is its sister root rapha, the word for healing, found in Jehovah Rapha: the Lord who heals. When we finally stop fighting and take that holy pause, we aren’t quitting; we are stepping right from raphah (letting go) into rapha (divine healing). We don’t need to carry weapons or fight back, because no weapon formed against us can win when our vindication and protection come directly from the Lord. This completely upends what spiritual warfare looks like. Dropping our guard in the presence of God isn’t surrender to the enemy—it is a high-level act of spiritual warfare. It sends a message to the spiritual realm that our security isn’t held together by our own hyper-vigilance. Real healing happens when the nervous system and the spirit realize they are allowed to rest in the middle of the storm. Throughout Scripture, God-given rest is a protective sanctuary. God isn't asking you to stand guard forever. He isn't sitting up there grading you on how long you can stay hyper-vigilant before you crack. The whole point of letting go—of sinking into that biblical sanctuary—is that you finally get to put the armor down. True recovery gives us places and moments where we are safe enough to unclench our fists, stop scanning the room, and rest. You don't have to live on high alert forever. Your spirit is allowed to exhale.

Don’t skip or loosen the seat belt for comfort. Position it across your hip/pelvis when possible. If it crosses your #stoma, a seat-belt pad or stoma guard may add protection. Our MeetAnOstoMate members share helpful tips and experiences in the Forum. #ostomy #urostomy

A #urostomy may be needed for bladder or pelvic cancer, birth defects (e.g., spina bifida), spinal injury, neurological bladder problems, or severe urinary incontinence unresponsive to treatment. Any thoughts?

Finding the right #ostomy pouch takes trial and error. Explore options and ask your ostomy nurse about accessories to improve comfort, security and fit. There are many helpful discussions on the MeetAnOstoMate Forum as well. #stoma #colostomy #ileostomy #urostomy

Is it really a big deal, a one-night stand with a stranger… maybe not? Make sure you feel safe and share only what you’re comfortable with. Your ostomy may not be their primary focus, and they may not even notice it at all. Any thoughts? #ostomy #stoma #colostomy #ileostomy

Sometimes, having a #stoma can put a strain on a relationship. Open, honest communication can help you understand how each other is feeling. Some couples even recreate their first date to reconnect. Could it help bring back the spark?

Before traveling make a list of the supplies and how many you’ll need. Traveling can be challenging, so pack extra items. Luggage can get lost, so have supplies in your carry-on. Most pharmacies and supply stores don't carry #ostomy supplies. Pre-cut your wafers/barriers.

A well-fitting pouch system may last 3–7 days. Empty the pouch when it is about 1/3 full. Frequent leaks, skin irritation, pain or difficulty with pouch care are reasons to seek advice from a WOC nurse. Your experience?
