Charging my solar batteries. Do not disturb. πŸͺΆπŸŒΏπŸ¦‰πŸ¦πŸ
#OhMyDouglas

A side-angle macro capture of a tiny male Downy woodpecker basking in bright afternoon light. The bird is positioned on a light-colored tree limb, facing right, with its small, sharp beak pointing skyward. Its wing displays intricate checkered bars of black and white, leading down to dark tail feathers. The backdrop is a clean, minimal gradient of sky blue with soft, out-of-focus brown twigs framing the scene.

Well jacket is mostly dry. It's definitely a black matte, so While its a success I still want it darker and richer. I guess I'll look for more RIT dye elsewhere and do a literal rinse & repeat routine see if I can get it darker.

A male Northern Cardinal perched on a twig, looking like he just got caught in a high-stakes game of hide-and-seek. The bird is a vibrant crimson red with a distinct black "mask" around his bright orange beak, giving him a slightly suspicious or intense expression. He is surrounded by a dense, blurry background of green leaves and branches, as if he is tryingβ€”and failing spectacularlyβ€”to blend into the foliage with his bright red feathers.

Fumes weren't stinky or anything, and I'm still airing out the house. Entire project went well.

Need more RIT dye for other projects ... oi!

An extreme macro, close-up photograph looking through the tines of a scratched metal fork buried deep into an orange pumpkin pie. The fork’s metallic teeth dominate the frame like imposing, weathered pillars or bars of a cage, showing heavy surface scratches and a warm, glowing orange reflection from the pie below. Through the gaps between the tines, the brightly lit background creates a dramatic, cinematic perspective, making a simple bite of dessert look like an epic, monumental structure.

When your auditory processing delays by a full five seconds and you’re just standing there, buffering, trying to decode whether that splash was a fish or a social expectation you're supposed to care about. πŸͺΆπŸŒΏπŸ¦‰πŸ¦πŸ

An adult Black-crowned Night-Heron hunches forward on a mossy log, sporting an expression that radiates pure, unadulterated judgment.
The bird is tightly pulled into itself, creating a stocky shape that emphasizes its broad chest covered in soft white and pale gray feathers. Its crown and back are a deep, slate gray-blue, contrasting sharply with its bright yellow legs and feet.
A single, impossibly long and thin white breeding plume swoops elegantly from the back of its head like a single dramatic hair strand styled with maximum gel. Its most striking features are its piercing, fiery orange-red eyes and a long, thick, dagger-like black beak, which points sharply downward as it glares intensely at something just out of frame.
The background is a lush, vibrant green tangle of tall marsh reeds and duckweed-covered water, perfectly framing this grumpy, avian gargoyle.

Sweet! You could probably do a seasonal series of four, with the leaves & colours and birdy positioning. Then you could go on with other themes and swap out birdy types (there's a lot of them).

A juvenile black-crowned night heron perches awkwardly on a mossy tree branch, looking like a grumpy, feathered potato with a sharp beak. Its brown plumage is heavily speckled with teardrop-shaped white spots, and its bright yellow eye is wide open in a comical, wide-eyed stare. Green leaves frame the left side of the shot against a bright, washed-out sky.

1,098 clicks of highway, a few provinces, and zero salt air later.

Funny how you can put that much distance between yourself and your first breath, yet still find your mind drifting back to the coast whenever the wind changes.

It was just keeping my robe company. πŸ’€ Yes, the one I had on last night.

The dopamine hit from finding the begleri almost makes up for the cortisol spike of losing it. Almost.

A juvenile Red-tailed Hawk strides purposefully across a vibrant green lawn, looking directly at the camera with an intense, funny expression. Captured mid-stride with its legs wide apart, its heavily feathered thighs resemble poofy, spotted pants or trousers. The hawk’s white chest features a distinctive "belly band" of brown streaks, and its mottled brown and white wings are tucked tightly against its body. The bright sunlight accentuates its fierce yellow eyes, sharp beak, and yellow talons, contrasting sharply with the soft, out-of-focus grassy background.

My jumping spider pair is still active in the window, we still refill the water fountain for them. It's Oct. 8 so I don't know if they're going to move someplace else, or even if they can find food still for a while longer. The windows will soon get frosty. These are not pets. #OhMyDouglas

A macro photograph captures a tiny, fuzzy jumping spider looking ready to critique your interior design choices. The spider features a mottled coat of orange, brown, and tan fuzz, giving it the appearance of a minuscule, eight-legged ginger kitten that has had way too much espresso. It clings to a pane of glass with geometric framing lines, staring intently downward with its oversized, shiny black main eyes. Its front legs are slightly raised as if it is mid-sentence, aggressively trying to negotiate entry into the warm house or demanding to know why the window hasn't been cleaned recently.

I caught this Cooper’s hawk mid-stance, either pulling off a masterful stretch or executing a tactical "slice" with maximum aerodynamic clearance. Absolute peak athletic performance. Those fluffy pantaloons are a choice, though. πŸ¦…

#OhMyDouglas

A hilarious low-angle view from behind a Cooper's hawk perched on a thick tree branch. The hawk is either preparing to or has just finished "slicing" (projecting its waste horizontally). Its fluffy reddish-brown and white undertail feathers are puffed out dramatically to the sides like a pair of giant, split Victorian bloomers, revealing a perfectly clear path beneath it and making its thin yellow legs look incredibly tiny by comparison. Its head is raised high and hidden behind its torso, leaving it looking like a comical, trousers-wearing creature.

Close-up of a Common Grackle perched on a rocky ledge, staring intently downward with pure chaotic energy. Its sleek, iridescent dark feathers glint with deep blue and purple hues in the sunlight, contrasting sharply with its pale, piercing yellow eye that screams "I know what you did." The bird balances on spindly black legs, seemingly plotting its next move against a vibrant, out-of-focus backdrop of deep blue water.

Achieving soft, flattering light requires putting your speedlite through a high-tech medieval interrogation setup.

A Canon Speedlite 430EX II flash unit looks like it's trapped in a high-tech medieval torture device. The flash is clamped inside a chunky black Godox S3 bracket. This bracket mounts the flash directly into a softbox, a large light modifier shaped like an inverted umbrella with a black exterior and a white fabric front panel.
The softbox acts as an enclosed tent around the flash. When the speedlite fires, its harsh, direct light bounces off the softbox's silver interior and diffuses through the white front fabric. This softens hard shadows and creates smooth, flattering illumination for photography. Right now, the flash's red sensor panel peeks out at the bottom like a glowing, panicked eye questioning why it is trapped in this giant plastic vice grip.
