took some photos that centered these two much more. getting pretty sleepy and less capable of yapping good things about pictures so these'll be our last for the night.

"antenna-tree in the basin" the titular antenna-tree is a redwood specimen with a weirdly broad and kind of flat top, looking rather different to its more traditionally-shaped companion next to it. the image is one of myriad parallel vertical lines - the burnt trunks of the redwoods of big basin and their fuzzy short coats of regrowth - standing almost-perpendicular to the gently rolling top-to-bottom, right-to-left momentum of the image. godrays, lensflare, and hazy light tinge the greenscape of the cliffs and mountainside with an inviting warmth, but this is a photo off the side of a ridge.

just really liked this particular scene.

and ya this is a different angle on some of the trees in "stand"! geometry is a fun accomplice for photography.

"out cropping" an image of a high mountainside/top in the santa cruz mountains. verdant brushy growth fills the image, scattered here and there with skeletally dry or dead branches and bushes. a copse of trees grows out to the left from the arc of motion in the right side and fore of the image, though they are outdone in height and frame-anchoring by both the bushes in the foreground and the big scraggly dead sun-bleached fork-trunked tree on the middle third column of the scene.

"STAND" a small cops of white-barked sun-bleached trees at high altitude, spindly branches bare from either exposure or earlier incident. the foreground is a mass grave of branches and trunks, all spidery capillary-branches and neuronal web-tangles of boughs amidst the lower greenscape. behind the arboroskeletal wall in the front are [at least] 12 trees, their apexes peeking out from the coat of leaves they've managed to regrow and/or keep, bone-white against the empty blue void of sky. a few of the trees starring in the sky and background of the image have other bent and angular branches jutting out at odd angles from their brushy green needle-coats; the bone-white colour of their bark gives them a decidedly limblike quality.

(distance beyond shade) another subsection of "TREMENDOUS WALL", this is a smaller piece that, again, relies on elements outside the frame and in the furthest reaches of the background to try to crowd the viewer in shadow, trunk, and branch. you have a bird's eye view from these gnarled branches. but that is all you have of a bird.

(INDOMITABLE TOWERS OF GREEN) a focused showcase of a few of the brushy redwoods in TREMENDOUS WALL OF CHAR AND GREEN, this variant edit exists simply to better highlight the trees in the center-frame of the larger image. past a dead specimen and a wide brushy other, they still stand. contrast is heightened to enhance their green-ness amidst the burnt blacks and greys around them.

"TREMENDOUS WALL OF CHAR AND GREEN" a photo of the surviving trees in big basin state park, taken from the edge of one of the winding paths into it. the enormous trees below reach into the sky that is the horizon of the image, giving the viewer a friendly reminder of just how large some lifeforms on earth are. the sides of the image are framed by scraggly branches and bright verdant bushy limbs, inviting the viewer deeper into the sky-void full of tree. the trees themselves are mostly reduced to spires with charcoal hide, though there are more than enough specimens to not fill the observer with a sense of environmental melancholy. and besides, many of burnt trees have green on them again by now. fire is part of the redwoods' life cycle, after all.

"BLEED UP OPEN ONWARD AND INTO HEAVEN" a wide shot of big basin in the mid-late afternoon, the atmospheric haze coating the treetops of the basin glowing bright in the near-gold sun, giving the sky and distance in the scene a sort of dreamlike feel. coming closer to the viewer are countless bottlebrush redwoods, regrown with stubby close-kept needles after the cataclysmic fire. their closer profiles and fire-charred trunks make them especially striking as countless parallel vertical stripes filling the bottom half of the image. as a reprieve, some scraggly brush and closer trees are here to frame the bottom and sides of the image, but the top and right, aglow with the sun, is open. bleed up, open onward, and into heaven.

needed to be in some deep trees the other weekend, so we went out with our camera to bear witness to big basin in autumn, six years after the burn.

a broad and sharply shadowed photograph of a section of the southeasterly parts of the grand canyon. the sky is deeply drunk on blue, save for the pale amassment of haze at the horizon. beneath this false cloudline, the canyon and its surroundings are cast in brilliant reds, oranges, and tans, coming up to the broad head of the southern rim lookout and its tower, the scattered greenery rooted nicely with a closer bit of scrub jutting into the lower right third of the frame. a true union of light, sky, plant, and earth. animal's included because animals, we, are the ones who capture this stuff.

a photo juxtaposing the lookout tower on the grand canyon's southern rim with the gorge-carved and catastrophically broad expanse of desert and sky beneath and beyond it. the tower can serve those less inclined to crawl from shadow or scrub as a starting point from which travel along the earth in any direction in-frame is possible. even off in to the distance, if you move the right ways. overall, the composition plays with angle of image capture in a way that bends one's concept of space. a ridge dominates the frame, and yet the horizon is hardly lower than it. how terribly vast such things must be.

a ground-heavy photo with the horizon on the upper third, this picture showcases the delicate interplay of light and shadow on the nooks and crannies of the canyon walls. layers of sedimentary colour and shape paint a history of the earth itself, and the barely-visible lookout tower near the center of the frame showcases the relative scale of humanity's time. we've always been suckers for the kind of things you can only get from steep elevation and rough terrain - perspectives and viewpoints that can turn the sky itself to earth, clouds replaced by jutting boulders and rough outcrops from whatever earthen expanse one's lens is pressed close to.

a heavily selectively exposed and contrasted blurry extreme closeup of a small boulder serves as the bright sun-baked anchor to gaze up at the moon in the expanse of night just beyond the fading blue. altogether, there is a tension in the image. kept it simple with this one. it was a photo captured on a whim anyway, since there happened to be a decent daymoon when we made it out to the canyon. wanted to do something with it that evoked a kind of microscale alien perspective with familiar objects - the moon itself, rocks, etc.

entitled "overlook." an expansive photograph of the internal ridges of the grand canyon, framed by a chevron-stripe of high desert forest in the foreground. deep shadows cling to the viewer-facing edges of the ridges within, and the sky is awash with the afternoon sun casting those aforementioned deep shadows. the viewer's eye is drawn along the cascading slopes and branches into the journey beyond.
