Mokuʻāweoweo Caldera Thermal [MTcam], Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park

#NPS #NationalParkService #HawaiʻiVolcanoes

This image is from a temporary thermal camera located on the north rim of Mauna Loa's summit caldera. The temperature scale is in degrees Celsius up to a maximum of 500 degrees (932 degrees Fahrenheit) for this camera model, and scales automatically based on the maximum and minimum temperatures on the caldera floor and not the whole frame, which sometimes results in the rim (bottom of image) looking saturated (white). Thick fume, image pixel size and other factors often result in image temperatures being lower than actual surface temperatures. Thermal webcams record in Centigrade, conversions to Fahrenheit are provided here for your convenience: 20°C=68°F, 40°C=104°F, 60°C=140°F, 80°C=176°F.

Middle Part of Mauna Loa's Southwest Rift Zone, Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park

#NPS #NationalParkService #HawaiʻiVolcanoes

This image is from a research camera positioned on a cone in Mauna Loa's Southwest Rift Zone in Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park. The camera looks northeast (upslope), focusing on the middle part of the Southwest Rift Zone. The volcano's summit is at upper right.

The webcams are operational 24/7 and faithfully record the dark of night if there are no sources of incandescence or other lights. Thermal webcams record heat rather than light and get better views through volcanic gas. At times, clouds and rain obscure visibility. The cameras are subject to sporadic breakdown, and may not be repaired immediately. Some cameras are observing an area that is off-limits to the general public because of significant volcanic hazards.

Question 6,

#NPS #NationalParkService #

Look close at this webcam to see water flowing over the side of this mountain. The water falls from a height of 2,425 feet! But you can also find many of these landscape features not quite as tall.

Mammoth Hot Springs - Travertine Terraces and Parade Ground, Yellowstone National Park

#NPS #NationalParkService #Yellowstone

Yellowstone is a place of change, and this view highlights a place where change is constant and evident—the travertine terraces of Mammoth Hot Springs. Terraces form when water rises through limestone, which then allows the water to carry high amounts of dissolved calcium carbonate. At the surface, carbon dioxide is released and the calcium carbonate is deposited, forming travertine, the chalky white rock of the terraces. In the foreground are the parade grounds for historic Fort Yellowstone—the focal point of daily life at the fort.

#NPS #NationalParkService #DevilsTower

This webcam updates every 30 seconds to show a still image of live conditions at the park. From the park entrance looking out towards the road which visitors use to enter the park. This is a great webcam to check road status in the winter, or the line to enter in the summer. Note that from late May through early September the wait to enter the park can be 30 minutes or more. Parking is very limited within the monument, but our staff work as quickly as they can to process transactions at the entrance station.
