PCT to FTDP/back. Phantom Crk. Trail from E Rosebud canyon 1930m start. 13km up to 3150m on Froze to Death Plateau, then back. Up top 10-15cm hard wind-packed ❄️. -3C w stiff NE breeze. Felt bad our Ursine friends, no Whitebark Pine cones, prime food source. #climate #hiking #montana #dogs #mountains

Mon Dieu we came all the way up from way down there at the bottom of E Rosebud Canyon. Solid steady ascent the entire way, but nothing horribly steep. in and out of snow on trail 2650m on up.

1930m E Rosebud Lake this morn. (l) and this aftn. (r). quite the relief that amazing canyon.

2300m Mystic Lake back edge down there left. to see it fully got to drop down a good ways, not feelin' it 😜 my feet were getting cold.

Froze to Death Plateau 3100m here looking S, up, as it winds around. It would not take long to FTD up here if the wind was stronger. Glad we didn't have that. -3C in the sun, didn't even need my shell.

there is the bare s-facing FTD approach way back on rite, where we ascended. made that much easier. 2300m Slough Lake here, 5K from start. around 0C here, somewhat shaded.

solid 10-15cm snowpack here 3100m. some will melt before next system, but not all. You can just see the back of 2300m Mystic Lake down there in W Rosebud Canyon. our E approach up the PTC from E Rosebud easier.

-1C NE breeze at 3000m Sundance has to rest in that, in the shade (l). which is why he does so well up there 3100m + (l). did not see any Whitebark Pine cones. sure does look cold up there on the FTDP 3200m +. It eventually winds around like a steep ramp, gets you to the approach of 3905m Granite Peak, highest in MT.

Beneath a clear whitewashed evening sky, we are standing in the shade atop a rocky cliff with patches of low, scrubby vegetation. The forest begins just to our right, these trees are also in shade. The sprawling valley several hundred feet below is dappled with gold-tinged evening sunshine and lengthening shadows. Near the far horizon is the city of New Haven. Past that are Long Island Sound and Long Island, New York, visible as blue gray and golden brown strips along that horizon. Many scattered buildings are visible in the valley below, but also wide swaths of forest, most of the trees sporting gold and orange fall foliage.

The community-run ski lodges are a pretty awesome bit of infrastructure, and quite communal. Here is the Pinnacles Lodge as well as a NZAC hut. They are not quite ski-in ski-out, but close. #mountains
