TW2026 "Monsters World Tour" - 15 Manananggal

#Toberween #MooreArt #Manananggal #Blood #Philippines

Tearing themselves in half once night falls, and taking to the skies of the Philippines comes the Manananggal. Bizarre creatures, whose organs hang out while their bat-like wings carry them aloft; the Manananggal are sometimes associated with vampires due to their food of choice being the blood and/or fetuses of sleeping pregnant women. Some stories also depict them as targeting newlyweds, happy couples, newborn babies, or in rarer cases unfaithful husbands. Their key (and possibly only) weakness is that their lower half remains motionless while they are out hunting. If the Manananggal is not able to reunite it's parts before the sun rises it will die, so the best methods to combat them are to burn the lower half or seal it with salt or garlic to prevent the two parts becoming whole again.

TW2026 "Monsters World Tour" - 14 Anansi

#Toberween #MooreArt #SFW #Anansi #Spider #Ghana #Akan #Africa #Trickster #WestAfrica

Anansi, the trickster spider - a figure from West African myth and legend. Anansi appears in a wide variety of tales, taking on both the roles of protagonist or antagonist. He has been depicted as spider, human, and a variety of in-between forms. --- I didn't want to just depict Anansi as either a vaguely spider-y man, or just a big honking spider... So I tried to give this abdomen a design and shapes that made it look like a traditional mask, sorta like actual camoflage insects and arachnids use in nature... (Imagine seeing that looking in through your window as you hear a voice - you could be forgiven for thinking it is just someone talking to you and not a mystical spider.) I also wanted to make him still unsettling, as he is just as often the bad-guy as he is the clever hero; and giving him a row of pearly human-like teeth in his spider maw did that trick I think.

TW2026 "Monsters World Tour" - 13 Banshee

#Toberween #MooreArt #SFW #Banshee #Ireland #Ghost #Specter

An Irish spirit that appears as a spectral wailing woman, who's mournful cries are an omen of pending death for the family of those that hear them. Descriptions of the Banshee's appearance vary from story to story, but the constant is the endless weeping cry. One prominent story suggests the Banshee is made of salty tears, and without gold to sustain them each year, they will dissolve away to nothingness. This leads them to trickery and mischief in attempts to be given the required gold before their yuletide deadline.

TW2026 "Monsters World Tour" - 12 Troll

#Toberween #MooreArt #SFW #Denmark #Norway #Sweden #Troll #Giant

Incredibly powerful, and incredibly old, we are taking a look at the Trolls of Nordic and Scandinavian myth. While sometimes depicted as being human sized, or sometimes smaller - Trolls tended to be titans that towered over humans. Preferring the mountains, hills, and forests to the areas that had become "civilized", Trolls did often seem to have some sort of society of their own - many stories would feature them living in familial groups. They were said to be incredibly strong, and often having a very keen sense of smell - able to tell when a human was about long before anything could be seen. (Many tales emphasize that the blood of Christians was particularly pungent.) Whether in a territorial sense, or full on malicious and aggressive - Trolls were often a threat to the humans that encounter them.

TW2026 "Monsters World Tour" - 11 Gashadokoro

#Toberween #MooreArt #SFW #Japan #Gashadokoro #Giant #Skeleton #Yokai

A towering colossus of clattering chattering terror, from Japan comes Gashadokoro. Said to be made up of the skulls of fallen soldiers left on the battlefield or those who died of starvation/famine, the skulls fuse into a giant skeleton that strides across the land seeking huan victims to scoop up and eat to try and sate its nightmarish hunger. Gashadokoro are said to be nigh-industructible, as they are already dead, and the skulls can simply re-assemble. They are also clever and can turn invisible and stalk their prey. The only clue that an invisible one may be nearby is the chattering sound of its teeth. They can be warded off, or avoided - but otherwise there is little to be done other than try to survive until its hunger and rage are finally released.

TW2026 "Monsters World Tour" - 10 Balor

#Toberween #MooreArt #SFW #Ireland #Fomorian #Giant #Balor

Giant and terrible, Balor was a leader of the Fomorians in Irish myth. Towering over his enemies, and often said to possess a single "malignant" eye. It varies whether this great eye could project venom or fire, or some other form of death upon his foes.

TW2026 "Monsters World Tour" - 09 Nue

#Toberween #MooreArt #SFW #Nue #Japan #Yokai

The head of a monkey, body of a tanuki, legs of a tiger, and a snake for a tail - a classic yokai from Japan, the Nue. Nocturnal creatures said to be able to shape-shift into thick black clouds, and known for a horrible cry that sounds like that of a scaly thrush, Nue were very mysterious creatures.

TW2026 "Monsters World Tour" - 07 Camazotz

#Toberween #MooreArt #SFW #Mayan #SouthAmerica #Bat #Camazotz

In Mayan mythology, Camazotz were colossal bat spirits that served the lords of the Underworld. They were said to exhale noxious vapors, and in a grimly fun bit from one story - they are said to have torn the head off a hero and hung it up to be used as the ball in the next ballgame of the gods.

TW2026 "Monsters World Tour" - 06 The Owlman

#Toberween #MooreArt #SFW #Cornwall #Owlman #CornishOwlman #OwlmanOfMawnan

First reported sighted in 1976 in the outskirts of Mawnan, Cornwall - the Owlman is our final Cryptid. Said to inhabit an old church, or other similar structures - the Owlman is reportedly as large as a man with great glowing red eyes. Feathered, pitch black, and with large claws - its loud shrill cries are said to be heard often when in the vicinity of the old church. --- The Owlman is (as many folks point out online) very similar to the USA's Mothman. I could have just drawn my take on a Mothman and called it a day, but that is no fun! So I really leaned into what a huge man-sized owl could be like and how it would be unique and spooky in its own way from its Stateside red-eyed pitch-black crypti-cousin.

TW2026 "Monsters World Tour" - 05 The Frogman

#Toberween #MooreArt #SFW #Ohio #Frogman #Frog #Wand #LovelandFrog

The Frogman, also known as the "Loveland Frog", is a cryptid reportedly seen in 1955 in Loveland, Ohio. A massive bipedal frog, said to be 4 feet tall or larger, the Frogman is said to lurk about in the less populated natural areas of Loveland. In some stories, it is said to be seen carrying a sparking wand of sorts... Whether this is magic, or advanced science, or something else entirely is not known.

TW2026 "Monsters World Tour" - 04 Mongolian Death Worm

#Toberween #MooreArt #SFW #Mongolia #DeathWorm #Worm

Said to lurk in the vast Gobi Desert, the Mongolian Death Worm is a cryptid beast with a terrifying tale. Sightings dating back to the 1940s claim that the Death Worm is a two foot long creature that burrows under the desert. It does so with such force that its movements can be tracked by the visible waves in the sand above ground. Drawn to moisture, it is said to mainly emerge after rainfall. The slightest touch can cause instant fatalities either due to an insanely potent and corrosive venom, or a naturally generated electric charge. --- I didn't wanna do the big Dune-esque wyrm that it is often depicted as, since the descriptions I saw seem to peg it as huge for a worm but not a giant. I then took the idea that it is drawn to the surface for moisture, and thought what if it was drawn up by a person and used the methods it uses to get through rock and soil to tear through the wet bundle of meat that makes up a person?

TW2026 "Monsters World Tour" - 03 Fresno Nightcrawler

#Toberween #MooreArt #SFW #California #FesnoNightcrawler #Creature

Probably the newest creature on our tour, California's Fresno Nightcrawlers were made popular in a series of videos from the early 2000s. The videos featured what appeared to be white bipedal creatures - mostly legs with no torso or arms - walking along a dark scene. --- I find the Fresno Nightcrawlers funny, but I didn't wanna just do the "white pants with a head" look that most folks do - so I opted to treat it like an actual creature made of bumpy flesh and thick muscles. Here we are in POV stumbling across one with our flashlight as others scatter in the distance.

TW2026 "Monsters World Tour" - 02 The Jersey Devil

#Toberween #MooreArt #SFW #NewJersey #JerseyDevil #Devil #Demon

Hailing from the New Jersey Pine Barrens in the United States of America, this iconic cryptid is the Jersey Devil. Tales tell of a woman who lived in the Pine Barrens discovering to her horror that she was pregnant with what would be her thirteenth child - filled with frustration and and misery she cursed the life growing in her, "Let this child be the devil!" In some versions of the tales, it was born human enough but grew more devilish as it aged, until it finally fled into the woods. Others say that upon voicing her curse, the fully formed devil burst out of the woman and flew off into the night... What would easily just be a bit of folklore has risen to new heights as reports of sightings, dead livestock attributed to it, and even supposed encounters with the devil have been a persistent thing since the mid-to-early 1800s...

TW2026 "Monsters World Tour" - 01 Yara Ma Yha Who

#Toberween #MooreArt #SFW #Austrailia #YaraMaYhaWho #Vampire

A cryptid from Southeastern Austrailia's Aboriginal culture, the Yara Ma Yha Who is a vampiric creature said to resemble a frog-man with a huge head, massive mouth, and no teeth. It is said to live in Fig Trees, and lurks in wait for travelers to let their guards down - at which point it will pounce on them. It will use the suckers on its fingers and toes to suck the victim's blood, before swallowing them whole. After swallowing its prey, it will drink water and then nap. Upon waking up, it will vomit forth the victim and flee. The victim will now be shorter and their skill will have taken on a slight reddish tint. Legend says that if a person should fall victim repeatidly, they will continue to shrink and turn redder as they are turned into a Yara Ma Yha Who.
