dlvr.itBottom Six Minutes: Mr. Saturday Night strikes againWe saw a lot of the usual from the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday night. They played the Buffalo Sabres, a team that we’ve grown to know quite well since last season. They jumped out to a two-goal lead, looking very in control of the game in the process. They blew that two goal lead, and ultimately had to tempt fate by finding themselves in three-on-three overtime yet again this season. It felt like this might be another squandering of at least a point.
But it was a Saturday night, and the other thing they usually get on Saturdays is heroics from one Cole Caufield.

A breakaway, finished with a cross-body snipe to far-side top corner was the cherry on top of his latest Saturday sundae. A truly absurd piece of shooting that only looked simple because of who was pulling the trigger. When he missed the net on a wide-open slap shot in the first period, it seemed like maybe he would end up with somewhat of an off night by his own standards. That was not remotely the case, as he ended the night with five shots on goal and two tallies, bringing him to five on the year so far, and once again on pace to reach the 50-goal plateau.
As frustrating as it was to see them surrender a two-goal lead again, there was a lot to like in their overall game, most notably the dominant performance that the top line turned in. When that line plays as well as they did on Saturday, the Habs look like they’re on the cusp of running away with games. Hopefully, if that trio can keep their momentum going, the team will start to do that instead of these admittedly exciting, flirtatious with danger outings that have to be decided in overtime or the shootout.
But hey, if you have Cole Caufield on a Saturday night, sometimes overtime is precisely where you want to be.
Your first star of the night, Mr. Saturday Night, Cole Caufield.
