At the right, a wide gravel path runs up the lower edge of a steep scree slope below a tall wall of layered, tan and gray rock whose upper cliffs disappear into low, billowing cloud. Two hikers in dark clothing, one wearing a knit cap and carrying a pack, walk away from the camera along the path. A band of low sunlight falls across the pale scree at the center of the frame, while the rest of the slope sits in cool shadow. To the left, a rocky valley with thin switchbacking trails drops away toward a distant pointed peak, with a small red-roofed hut near its base. The sky is thick white and gray cloud with a small opening of blue at the upper left. The colors are muted, with warm sandy rock against cool gray shadow, and the film grain is visible. The two hikers set the scale and give the path a direction, and the path itself, along with the thin trails in the valley, leads the eye toward the distant peak and hut. The one patch of light on the scree is the brightest, warmest note in an otherwise cool, muted frame, so it pulls the attention away from the cloud. The heavy cloud mass presses down on the wall and gives the image a sense of weather moving through rather than a fixed view, a theme common to alpine landscape work.
