For the last day of #mathsweek2026, take a closer look inside Opera Mathematica by Samuel Marolois, a fascinating 17th-century work exploring the connections between mathematics, art, architecture, and perspective. Which of these remarkable illustrations catches your eye the most?

Prof David Malone, Director of the Hamilton Institute and Professor in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Maynooth University, has been named the recipient of the 2026 Maths Week Ireland Award. 🎉

A medium close-up, low-angle shot captures a smiling, middle-aged man with long brown hair, who leans forward onto a dark surface, resting his chin on his hands which are clasped over a curved, bronze award.

His long, brown hair falls past his shoulders, catching backlight from behind him. He has blue eyes and is looking directly at the camera with a subtle smile. He is wearing a white T-shirt that features a faint graphic design with red lettering.

His hands are clasped over the award, which sits on a black box in the foreground. The award consists of a curved, textured bronze piece on a black base, with a small brass plaque that reads “Maths Week Ireland, Award for Raising Public Awareness of Mathematics, David Malone 2026.”

He is in a room with two large, multi-paned sash windows behind him, looking out into a dark night. The window frames are a pale cream color. Strong lighting from the sides and above illuminates the man and his award, while the rest of the room is in shadow.

Another one for #mathsweek2026!

John Wilkins, in his book Mathematicall magick (1648), claims that if the gear in this illustration is turned one thousand times an hour, the sail at the top will be turned 1000000000000 times and move faster than a star. Impressive!

Wednesdays in the Archive📜

For #mathsweek2026, we are sharing an accounts book with a list of books purchased by Marsh's Library between 1935-1936. An asterisk beside a title means it was purchased to replace a missing book.

There's something magical waiting during Maths Week.
Maths isn't just numbers. It's everywhere. It's how we understand the world.
