One of the topics in our current Stanford #mathCircle is #FermiEstimating. I love how this 2nd grader described estimating the leaves on a tree. #mtbos #iteachmath #mathisfun #mathiseverywhere

What a cute response I got to a #mathCircle question for 1st & 2nd graders re: number bases; we use base 10 because we have 10 fingers so have 10 digits. What if we had another number of fingers? This 1st grader had an answer for 11; for 16: "I would ask my daddy"! #mtbos #iteachmath #mathisfun

In ChapelHill #mathCircle my kiddo led a group w/her #origami love. I worked w/my 1st-3rd graders on #FermiEstimating. Several est. bricks on a walkway, leaves on shrubs, people at a white coat ceremony, etal. I disproved one who said they go to 1000 homes at #Halloween. #mtbos #iteachmath #mathisfun

In Stanford #mathCircle for 1st/2nd grade this wk we reviewed hw incl finding "Handshake Numbers" which some saw as Triangle Numbers. I love how some enacted this. One made a cartoon showing she understands-why with, say, 20 people, there are 19+18+17+...+ 0 handshakes. #mtbos #iteachmath #mathisfun

I just heard my proposed talk for 2027 Joint Mathematics Meetings of American Institute of Mathematics (AIM, aimath.org) was accepted! I'll be sharing re: #mathCircle teaching like mine at Stanford & UNC for special session "Math Circles Everywhere: From Classrooms to Communities" #mtbos #iteachmath
