Canada has completed 689 mass timber projects, with 76 more under construction and 67 in planning. This isn't an emerging trend anymore. It's an established delivery method.

The National Building Code allowed 12-storey mass timber in 2020. Ontario is already building past that height. The code caught up to the engineering years ago. Most GCs still haven't.

Mass timber chars on the outside and holds structural strength underneath. Concrete spalls. Steel loses strength fast in heat. Fire codes didn't get generous with wood, the testing caught up.

By the time a fabricator sees the drawings, half the RFIs are already baked in. Bring mass timber into the room during design, not after permitting. The schedule savings live upstream, not on site.

Mass Timber Monday: Federal housing agencies, provincial forestry investment, new fabrication capacity. The pieces for a real Canadian mass timber industry are lining up at the same time. Execution is the only thing left to prove.

Canada needs 5.8 million new homes by 2030. Concrete and steel can't move that fast. Mass timber components arrive pre-cut, pre-drilled, ready to stack. That's not a marketing claim, that's a housing math problem.

Perkins&Will's modular mass timber system is pitched partly as risk reduction. Align the regulatory, manufacturing, and livability criteria once and you get a scalable delivery model that reduces risk for municipalities and funders on every project after.

The global market for engineered wood is forecast to top 12 billion US dollars by 2035. Canada has the forests, the fibre quality, and growing fabrication capacity to take a real share of that. Capturing it is a manufacturing problem now, not a messaging one.

Build Canada Homes put out a formal call this year for Canadian firms working in modular, panelized, and prefabricated construction, mass timber included. The federal government is not just permitting this material anymore. It is recruiting for it.

A First Nations led project in Burns Lake, BC is turning wood fibre once considered waste into insulation and packaging material. Zero-waste production is not a slogan. It is what a mill does with what used to go in a burn pile.

Build Canada Homes wants design-build teams bidding on the 1,100 unit Heron Road site in Ottawa to prove mass timber and prefabrication experience before they win the work. Early collaboration just became a qualification requirement.

The latest US softwood lumber tariffs run as high as 50 percent. Engineered wood products like CLT and glulam were left off the list this round. Mass timber carries trade risk, but it is not the same risk profile as raw lumber exports. Worth knowing the difference.

BC has opened mass timber up to almost any building type. Restaurants, shops, care facilities, warehouses, not just towers and schools. The material stopped being a special case. Now it is a standard option on the table.

A shop drawing with every connection resolved is not extra effort. It is the job. What gets solved at the CNC never becomes a problem on the crane.

Mass timber structures can cut erection time by up to 25 percent compared to conventional systems, according to Zurich's Canadian risk analysis. That is not a marketing number. That is a schedule number, and schedule is what developers actually pay for.

Ottawa committed 2.8 million dollars to seven forestry projects in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia this February, several tied to expanding mass timber manufacturing. The supply chain for wood construction is being built east of Ontario too.

Ottawa backed a new advanced wood manufacturing facility in Vancouver this spring as part of a broader push to scale domestic mass timber production. Capacity investment moves fast. Projects that lock fabrication scope early are the ones positioned to use it.

Mass timber in Canada has moved past the showcase-building phase. Developers under pressure to deliver faster and cheaper are now specifying it as a practical structural option, not a sustainability statement. That shift is the real story this year.
