The Melrose Dems City Committee have voted to endorse the following positions on the 9 statewide ballot questions.

Early voting begins October 17, and Election Day is November 3.
We do want to highlight that Question 9 is worded backward. We believe this gun lobby-sponsored ballot question to be intentionally deceptive. The title “Repeal Gun Laws” suggests to most readers a “Yes” vote will do just that; however, a “Yes” vote is needed to KEEP the current law while a “No” vote will in fact repeal it.

Question 1, YES. This would hold the governor and the legislature to the same public records law that already applies to our municipal government.

Question 2, YES. This allows public defenders at the Committee for Public Counsel Services to bargain collectively.

Question 3, NO. The top two primary can dilute votes and shut a majority party out of the final ballot. It is not a step toward ranked choice voting, nor does it address the real challenge facing those who want to run for office, notably the money and time required to run for office.

Question 4, YES. This allows Election Day registration. Currently, Massachusetts requires voters to register 10 days ahead.

Question 5, NO. This tax revenue cap would send revenue above the limit back to taxpayers, including Fair Share funds for education and transportation. It would make it harder for the state to meet rising costs, just as federal cuts arrive.

Question 6, NO. While most of us strongly support conservation, this question redirects existing tax revenue rather than adding new funding.

Question 7, YES. This reduces minimum lot sizes to 5,000 square feet where public water and sewer exist with the goal of addressing the affordable housing shortage.

Question 8, NO. This would recriminalize recreational marijuana. It would undo the 2016 law.

Question 9, YES. A YES vote keeps the Commonwealth's gun safety law in place. A NO vote repeals it.
