A 15-gram shergottite meteorite designated Dhofar 378 was discovered near Dhofar, Oman. In the 2014 March 07 issue of Science, Stephanie Werner, Anouck Ody, and François Poulet argued that shergottites originated in the crater Mojave.

Johann Schröter drew a sketch of Mars. “The planet seems cut down.” This drawing and later ones during this apparition tend to show increasing detail. The dark patch in the center of the drawing is suggestive of Syrtis Major.
