No matter how many times I watch a loon shake off its wings after preening, I still have to photograph it. It makes such a pretty picture!

I hung out with this heron for an hour Monday in the last light of the day. And boy did it put on a show preening, which allowed me to snap a couple of unusual poses.
The first one had me laughing out loud.
Green herons drop bugs, small twigs, and even bread crumbs onto the water, stand motionless, and strike when a small fish investigates. I'd love to photo that behavior! But this heron just eyed me warily, then went deeper into the shadows to preen.
Did you know that loon eyes are vibrant red in the summer and a dull red-brown in the winter?
This Great Blue Heron was kind enough to let me try my hand at videotaping from the kayak through my 600mm lens while it foraged for lunch.
