We are proud to announce that in collaboration with our brilliant volunteers, we are releasing a fascinating series of spooky informational graphics focused on Creatures of the Deep. Today’s graphic focuses on the glorious Giant Isopod! Giant Isopods are one of the freakiest-looking creatures in the ocean. Believe it or not, they are actually related to the pill bugs we all find in our gardens! Similar to the oarfish and giant squids, the giant isopods are evidence of deep-sea gigantism. They use their hard exoskeleton to defend against predators such as sharks. Notice those massive eyes? They are used to traverse the deep oceans and locate food. If you ever go on to the Deep Sea Nautilus Project, you can see these monsters feeding on dead sea life. These amazing creatures also utilize chemistry to sense for prey and get around. Their long antennae are perfect for this task. They can reach almost twenty inches in length! These giant isopods have seven pairs of legs. These fourteen legs help them dig into the sea floor to avoid predators. One of the most shocking facts is that these isopods can go years without eating. Imagine if a human had that superpower! This makes them one of the most resilient creatures in the ocean. And also one of the most frightening!

Today’s article focuses on the numerous dead zones in the baltic sea, why they are there, how they form, & what their consequences are. The area of the central Baltic Sea covering (as of 2024) approximately 70,000 square kilometers is considered the largest human-induced oxygen dead zone. The second largest is located in the Gulf of Mexico, yet it is 3 times smaller than the largest one. However, despite this fact, few people know of its existence, and the importance of preventing it from expanding.
