Truly @chrissteller.bsky.social has the best #localangle posts.

If it were up to me you’d get content like: Did you know that MST3K started in the Twin Cities & the name of the ship is The Satellite of Love which is named after a Velvet Underground song?

Follow Chris.

Get the deep cuts.

“She then pursued a master’s degree in psychology at the University of Minnesota but dropped out after two semesters because, she said, she felt that her ideas and research were not very likely to be funded as well as men’s.” #localangle

Of these 3 #localangle tracks, I believe only Golden Smog’s cover of Bad Company’s “Shooting Star” was out before the Clerks soundtrack. Soul Asylum put “Can’t Even Tell” on their own movie tie-in single or EP CD, while Bash & Pop’s “Making Me Sick” is on a 2017 expanded reissue of their 1993 debut.

Speaking of Johnny Rey, when he left Flamingo (pre-Flamin’ Oh’s), he went to L.A. and formed a band with Jack Lee. Mr. Lee had been in a power pop band called the Nerves and wrote and performed the song “Hanging on the Telephone,” which was later popularized by Blondie. #localangle

Excerpt from the book Complicated Fun:
ROBERT WILKINSON: We changed to the Flamin' Oh's in about 1980, after Johnny Rey left. Johnny wanted to pursue some other music. He had been in contact with Jack Lee, who wrote "Hanging on the Telephone," out in LA. He wanted to go do his thing. That was cool. We stayed a four piece, Flamingo. We made our first album, then changed our name to the Flamin Oh's because there was an R&B band called the Flamingos. They heard about us and said, "That's a little too close for comfort, boys." So we changed to the Flamin' Oh's. That was actually Curtiss A's doing. One night on the marquee outside the Longhorn, he was being a smartass, and he separated the " from Flamingo. It was "Flaming o." We took that and ran with it. We dropped the "g" put the apostrophe up there, added the "h" and apostrophe
""because we liked the idea that it was weird and didn't mean anything. It just sounded cool. We became Flamin' Oh's and put out the record Flamin' Oh's, the green album.
