I had a great time up in Cumbria. I must say even though I had heard of Lake District before, I didnโ€™t fully realise how beautiful it is and I have to come back to explore it properly!

The Langdale Pikes are caught in sunlight behind Lingmoor Fell which is in shadow. The spoil heaps from past quarrying are in the foreground and slowly being reclaimed by nature as trees grow on them.

'Follow the leader'.
Herdwick sheep are a hardy, native breed to the Lake District fells

A Lakeland scene on a bright winters day.
The image shows a small flock of Herdwick sheep grazing by the shore of Buttermere in the Lake District, Cumbria, England with Fleetwith Pike rising in the background.
One of them is ahead of the others who appear to be following the leader.
The colourful paint markings on their backs are "tup-marks" used by farmers to track breeding and activity.
95% of all Herdwick sheep are found in Cumbria, making them an iconic symbol of the area's landscape and cultural heritage.
Herdwicks are known for being the hardiest of all British hill sheep breeds, well-suited to the harsh conditions of the high fells.
Lambs are born black, and their fleece turns a distinctive grey with a white head as they mature.
The breed has a natural "hefting" instinct, meaning they tend to stay on their specific area of the fell without extensive fencing.
Beatrix Potter, the author and illustrator, was a keen Herdwick breeder and played a key role in preserving the breed.

Hiked up Helvellyn from the Thirlmere side, and it was Hellish! Took 4 hours to cover less than 4 miles. Socked out on top with high wind and hail, but still strangely enjoyable in retrospect! #Helvellyn #LakeDistrict

Penny Rock - I spent the morning in the woods. Despite this little example, the overwhelming colour of the canopy is still green. Those beech leaves which had turned a few days ago are now mostly on the floor after the recent winds. #capturewithconfidence #lakedistrict #grasmere #wordsworth
