Just behind Saininji, a small path leads to the Kaseyama Castle Ruins (鹿背山城址). I really enjoyed spotting so many maple trees around the temple—it felt so welcoming! #kaseyamacastleruins #鹿背山城址 #japanese #castle #mountaincastle #kizugawa #木津川市 #kyotoprefecture #京都府 #japan #hiking #adventure #bamboo

Info on Kaseyama Castle: Built in 1188 by Kizu Hidekiyo to protect Kofukuji, Kaseyama Castle was restored and fortified between 1562–68 by Matsunaga Hisahide—notorious for killing Ashikaga Yoshiteru and burning Nara’s Great Buddha—to defend Yamato from Yamashiro and Miyoshi Masayasu, who held nearby Kizu Castle. Matsunaga, lord of Tamonyama, Shigisan, and Ryuosan Castles, positioned three main baileys in a line atop Mt. Kase, linked by terraced baileys and protected by V-, U-, and vertical moats. Fortifications concentrated on the southern and western sides, the expected Miyoshi attack routes.Photo, no descriptionPhoto, no description

Yesterday, I explored the lovely Kaseyama area in Kizugawa, Kyoto Prefecture. My first stop was Sainenji (西念寺), a cosy Buddhist temple tucked up a steep slope. #buddhism #temple #kizugawa #木津川市 #kyotoprefecture #京都府 #japan #hiking #adventure #bamboo
