The Third (and last) #SpanishArmada was defeated on #ThisDayInHistory in 1597. #KingPhilipII had initially intended to aid an Irish rebellion, then changed to a full invasion. As with the smaller Second Spanish Armada, it was mostly dispersed by storms and then opted to retreat.
