The banshee wasn't a monster. She was a messenger, a mourner, and perhaps an echo of Ireland's ancient keening tradition. Why does her cry still resonate centuries later? My latest article explores the history behind the legend.

The Irish word for werewolf carries echoes of a time when the line between human & wild wasn't as defined.

Have you heard of the FAOLADH before? It's the human-wolf of Irish folklore, not always as sinister as a proper werewolf.

Púca in Irish folklore is a mischievous spirit. Most often púca appears as horse or pony. In that form, púca hoists people and gives them a wild ride.
According to legend, one púca will appear on hill in Leinster every November and predict future until next year's November.

There is an old rule in Irish country places that no one should pick a blackberry once the month of October is over. By the first of November, the people said, the puca had been over the hedges, and the fruit that remained was spoiled.

Legend says an Earl sleeps beneath Lough Gur, emerging every 7 years on a white horse.

Archaeology tells another story: people have lived around this Limerick lake for 6,000+ years.

Maybe ancient landscapes collect legends because generations keep needing to explain them.

On Hallow Eve people avoided throwing water out of the house, since the souls of the dead were about. If you had to, you called "Seachain!" first so they could step aside. #WitchSky #SuperstitionSat #IrishFolklore

The most common fortune-telling game on an Irish Hallow Eve used three saucers: clay, water and a ring. You were blindfolded, led to the table, and picked one. #WitchSky #WyrdWednesday #IrishFolklore

She came to me in dreams and visions. She came to me when I was a child. She came to me as a teen. She came to me as a young man and an old one. She never let me go. Every single night, I saw her face, felt her touch. I wasn’t scared as a child. She didn’t scare me as a teen. I’m scared now. I’m so scared. As I lay on my deathbed at eighty-two, she finally told me her name:

“Muriel, love. Now sleep.”
