Another animal that really speaks for itself, and it matches up with the date! Sawfish are so fun. Utterly ridiculous, but so fun. And truly a contraption, I didn't have to edit this at all to make it fit, sawfish are just... like that.

A greyscale drawing of a sawfish. Text at the top reads "290. Largetooth Sawfish. Pristis pristis. "Contraption"" and the date at the bottom is 17/10/2026 - International Sawfish Day!

#InternationalSawfishDay: Here’s a #sawfish in the earliest surviving version of al-Qazwini's 'Aja'ib al-Makhluqat wa Ghara'ib al-Mawjudat (aka The Wonders of Creation), Wasit, Iraq, 1280 CE. In later versions, it was often depicted more like a #swordfish (2nd image, Iraq or E. Türkiye, 15th c. CE).

Detail of a sawfish illustration in sZakariya al-Qazwini's 'Aja'ib al-Makhluqat wa Ghara'ib al-qat wa Mawjudat (The Wonders of he
Creatures and the Marvels ofasit, Creation), an important work of Islamic cosmography which was probably first written in the 1260s, and for centuries after was reproduced across the Islamic world. This illuminated manuscript was made in Wasit, Iraq in 1280 CE and is the earliest known surviving version.

I heard it's #InternationalSawfishDay so I thought I'd contribute. I didn't know they were rays and different from sawsharks! 👀

Happy #InternationalSawfishDay! We're talking all about the five living species of sawfish on today's stream (and how to save them from extinction!)

We're also exploring the many extinct species in this family, plus the convergently-evolved lookalikes ("pristinization"!)
