One time my 8th graders and I were figuring out if we could bust out the windows because the panes were so small only a couple could get out. I said I would distract the shooter. One of my toughest guys got teary-eyed.

"You'd protect us?"

The hardest was a long lockdown in the library. One of my boys started crying because it was nearly the end of the day and he didn't want his bus driver to come to school and get shot.

Think this was when there was a bank robbery in town and we were locked down as a precaution. No shots. #inners

I hated the teacher training when the cops came and pretended to shoot us. My legs weren't happy at the time and I had a cane. They said that was one of the best things I could use to throw in an assailant's face, startle them and give my kids a chance. #inners
