Spent some time today at the #WoudaGemaal #UNESCO site with the fam. Absolutely gorgeous piece of #IndustrialHistory - a #SteamPowered pumping station that has been in continuous use for well over a hundred years, that is still contributing to a large part of our […]

[Original post on dice.camp]

View of the land side of the pumping station. There's a super wide canal leading towards a neo-Renaissance meets Amsterdam School building blocking the canal at the end. The building has a 60 meter high brick chimney (which was apparently built three times before it took) on the kettle hall. The machine hall, most of the structure, is a long symmetrically building with huge high windows which allow the light from the other side to come through. Two of the four giant steam kettles in the kettle hall with a network of red painted pressure pipes leading away from them. A modern step ladder and gas burner are testament to the place still being in use to manage water levels.Huge flywheels and covered paddle wheels on the inside of the main Hall generating enough water motion to do away with a couple of swimming pools per second. It all looks very steampunk but hugeSea facing side of the pumping station showing the main hall with, in the water, four massive gates letting the water out. The doors are made of hardwood that have lasted since 1917 for greatest part.

Black and white photo of a woman wearing sunglasses sitting indoors at a table with a lit candle, pouring tea, while massive industrial cooling towers loom outside the window against a hazy sky.

An industrial relic resting on the sidewalk for #WeekMforMachinery. ⚙️️🧱 Walking near the University of Pennsylvania. An antique cast-iron press standing sentinel beneath a curved brick arch in the late winter sun.

A vertical street photograph from February 26, 2014, capturing an antique cast-iron industrial press standing on a concrete sidewalk outside a yellow brick building near the University of Pennsylvania. Mounted on dark wooden skids, the heavy blue-gray and rusted machine features a large spoked iron flywheel and handwheel, framed beneath a dramatic curved brick archway and closed corrugated metal door. The composition highlights the geometric curves of the wheel and the architectural arch.

Today's #Photo (taken yesterday) is of #Aberthaw Limeworks, which closed 100 years ago. At that time there would have been a port where the large pond is, now separated from Môr Hafren (Bristol Channel) by a sea wall

Looking across a still pond, bordered with feathery rushes to the ruins of grey stone square building with a red brick chimney. A deep blue sky populated with wispy white clouds is reflected in the water.

Ashton Mill in Cumberland, Rhode Island was built in 1867 as a textile mill. Decades later, its Owens-Corning plant produced beta cloth used in Apollo spacesuits. 🚀

Bhutto didn't create inequality but nationalisation broke entrepreneurship. Pakistan needed competition, not state ownership.

We didn’t restore the power plant.

Restoration is for museums and guilty consciences.

We dragged the beast backward through time, kicked the dust off its bones, and told the turbines to remember what thunder felt like.
