I met a wonderful Californian through MeetAnOstoMate. After he retired, he moved to Canada, where I sponsored him for permanent residency. The years we've shared since have been truly unforgettable. P. A., 53, Canada (From the MAO Forum)

A #Jpouch is an internal reservoir made from the small intestine and connected to the anus, avoiding permanent #ileostomy in some patients. Stool passes through the anus. A temporary loop ileostomy diverts stool while the pouch heals, then is usually reversed. Anyone with J-pouch experience? #stoma

We are not given a Stoma Encyclopedia when we leave hospital, but we do have this great site and friendly, experienced people.

One-piece pouches combine the skin barrier and pouch, so the whole system is changed at once. Two-piece systems keep them separate, making pouch changes easier while the barrier can remain in place longer. What's your experience?

Finding the right #ostomy pouch takes trial and error. Explore options and ask your ostomy nurse about accessories to improve comfort, security and fit. There are many helpful discussions on the MeetAnOstoMate Forum as well. #stoma #colostomy #ileostomy #urostomy

When #IBD, such as #Crohns or #UC, causes inflammation or bowel damage unresponsive to treatment, an #ileostomy (diverting waste from the small intestine) or #colostomy (from the colon) may be needed. Waste passes through a #stoma into a pouch. Both can be temporary or permanent.

Is it really a big deal, a one-night stand with a stranger… maybe not? Make sure you feel safe and share only what you’re comfortable with. Your ostomy may not be their primary focus, and they may not even notice it at all. Any thoughts? #ostomy #stoma #colostomy #ileostomy

Planned #ostomy? Ask before surgery: Why do I need it? Alternatives, risks and benefits given my health history? How'll it be performed? Best anesthesia? Preparation and diet? Recovery/home care/WOCN? Success rate? Cost/insurance? More suggestions?

Sometimes, having a #stoma can put a strain on a relationship. Open, honest communication can help you understand how each other is feeling. Some couples even recreate their first date to reconnect. Could it help bring back the spark?

A well-fitting pouch system may last 3–7 days. Empty the pouch when it is about 1/3 full. Frequent leaks, skin irritation, pain or difficulty with pouch care are reasons to seek advice from a WOC nurse. Your experience?

Many manufacturers offer free #ostomy product samples. Try different options to find what works best for your stoma and lifestyle. If possible, test adhesives on another area of skin first for signs of sensitivity.

It’s world ostomy day, so here’s a me with an ileostomy, the blurb is in the comments as this isn’t a place with space to witter. It’s an old pic, I looked nicer six years ago 😁, with my midriff uncovered to show my ileostomy bag.

Healthy skin around the #stoma should look like the skin on the rest of the abdomen, free of rashes, redness and irritation. If redness, soreness or broken skin persists or worsens, consult your stoma nurse or healthcare professional.

Life with an #ostomy often means adapting to emotional challenges, changes in body image, and new routines. Many MAO members say that, with time, self-care and mutual support, they’ve learned to live healthy, active lives. What helped you adjust?

For newbies: An #ostomy is an opening in the abdomen (stoma) that reroutes waste from the digestive system to a pouch worn over the #stoma. It is usually a #colostomy (from the colon) or an #ileostomy (from the small intestine). Some ostomies are temporary, others are permanent

Nine weeks post surgery at University Hospitals Sussex where I had two resections for #crohnsdisease. Living with even a temporary #ileostomy is still a challenge, albeit a bit easier. And next week I'll make a trip to work in the Royal Astronomical Society offices in London. Photo: Jane Penny

Follow surgeon’s advice on when intimacy is safe. Before getting close, empty the pouch. Consider a cover or special underwear. Choose comfortable positions. Focus on closeness, kisses and hugs. What else makes it comfortable and special? #stoma #ostomy #colostomy #ileostomy

After surgery, a #stoma may have a little mucus or minor bleeding. As it heals, it should be pink or red, moist, not painful. A small amount of bleeding when cleaning can be normal, but persistent bleeding, pain or unusual changes should be checked.
