The causes include people losing control of their burning debris piles, sparks caused by chains or other metal equipment, discarded cigarette butts, escaped camp fires that were never fully extinguished and more. #IdahoFire

And, fwiw, I still think the snowpack numbers/models this year in some areas were overreporting vs actual.

A Super Puma assigned to the Price Valley Helitack #IdahoFire crashed while supporting the Dome Fire in Yosemite NP.
Reports are that only the two crew were onboard, both died. No Price Valley Firefighters involved.

Only satellite detected heat on #IdahoFire I've seen in proper timber in the last 7 days :
- Buckhorn fire, new fire from the 10th, 150 acres. pocket of north facing timber surrounded by grass
- Double Springs fire. Interior burning in dense timber within the perimeter. No growth in 30+ days

@zebpalmer.comSep 14, 2026, 7:27 PM

There were 4 new fires yesterday, total of about 185 acres combined, 150 of which were on a fire near Emmet. 3 are contained or out, the last probably is too just hasn't been updated in the dispatch log yet.

Air Attack & scoopers up on the 161-acre Buckhorn fire east of Pine / Featherville. It's the only #IdahoFire actively spreading. It active and torching all night. A large pocket of dense N-facing timber has burned; crews are trying to stop it from reaching other pockets of timber.

A little bit of heat showing tonight on the Buckhorn fire, an Initial Attack fire east of Pine/Featherville. #IdahoFire

Saw it outside this afternoon: high-altitude smoke, but it looked fairly fresh. Assumed from a SoCal 🔥, but nope. Looking at everything, it *appears* to me that it's smoke from the Chelan, Washington, area that got pulled offshore and then pushed back at us this morning

See alts:

250mb (35,000ish feet) winds show the jet stream coming down from the northern Pacific, turning SW around Seattle/Vancouver, meandering out into the Pacific, then heading NE across the US. GOES-West visible Imagery Tuesday Evening shows what appears to be a thin band of high-altitude smoke across Oregon and Idaho. Tuesday morning, the smoke was thicker and looked fairly fresh

Two new IA fires today #IdahoFire

We're entering hunter fire season... Given the rain we've had, most IA calls over the next few days will be escaped campfire calls.

In other news, no satellite-detected heat on any existing fires. They're not out, but certainly heat has been knocked down.

Here in #IdahoFire we see a lot of burn scar debris flows, especially in Central Idaho. In fact there’s currently a flash flood watch for it.

This excellent video explains why burn scars are dangerous for years after the fire.
