This is a wasp. Specifically a sawfly larva, Diprion pini I think. I love sawflies like this because they really challenge what people think of as a "wasp". Beautiful animal.

Extreme macro close up of a sawfly larva's head and front body against a black background. The larva looks like a caterpillar. Its head is a glossy, rounded, orange brown capsule with a darker patch on top and a scattering of fine short hairs. A single round black eye sits inside a black patch on the side of the head, with a small pale antenna stub just below it. Dark mouthparts point down and to the right. Behind the head the body is soft, wrinkled and pale creamy yellow, slightly translucent, with two bold matte black spots and rows of tiny black bristles. Black and white banded legs grip a twig at the bottom of the frame. A blurred brown stem runs out of focus to the right.

Ectemnius sp., a Crabronid or square headed wasp. Uncertain if I have ever photographed this genus before. Was hard to get a better photo bc it was flying around quickly inside my car! #wasps #insects #hymenoptera in central/southern IL, the species seem difficult to ID by photo.

🍇🐝 New open-access paper! In Northern Italian vineyards, more semi-natural habitat within 200 m meant more parasitoid wasps (71 taxa recorded!) and less European grapevine moth.
