“Don of the Dead”

This #IndigenousPeoplesDay: how can the better candidate for Native Hawaiians be on the side actively assaulting Native Hawaiian programs and institutions? My new #cartoon.

#HiPol #Illustration #DigitalArt #EditorialCartoon #Politics #Elections #Hawaii #Art #Horror #Slasher

My latest editorial cartoon, "Don of the Dead," captures the central contradiction of Hawaiʻi's Congressional District 2 race in a single image.

There's Brenton Awa, the Republican challenger, laboring up a steep hill toward a sign that reads "120th U.S. Congress." He's stooped under the weight of two massive four-sided weights strapped to his back. The visible faces read: Rampant Corruption. Epstein Files. Tariffs & Inflation. Iran War. (If there were a fifth visible surface, I'd have added a nod to the domestic terrorism of ICE and the white supremacist thugs the GOP has enabled.)

Meanwhile, Jill Tokuda, the two-term Democratic incumbent, is cruising past him—uphill, on rollerblades—and as she passes, she raises a can of bug spray and blasts it directly into the face of the pest clinging to her opponent's back.

That pest is a monkey-sized Donald Trump, dressed as Michael Myers from Halloween. He's wearing the mask. He's brandishing a kitchen knife in one hand. And in the other, he holds a piece of paper labeled "Native Hawaiian Program Funding"—clearly slashed in half by the blade.

The title of the piece is "Don of the Dead." The pun is deliberate. Awa may be Native Hawaiian, but he is carrying the very force that is dismantling Native Hawaiian political power—while Tokuda treats it like the infestation it is.

They've got the money, the name recognition, and the nerve to skip every debate. My new #cartoon on Hawaiʻi's Debate Dodgers—and why "showing up" should be the bare minimum. ⚾

#art #digitalart #editorialcartoon #illustration #politics #darkmoney #democracy #HiPol #Hawaii #elections #baseball

Ed Case, Josh Green, and Derek Kawakami—three of Hawaiʻi's most powerful establishment politicians—are dressed in Dodger blue baseball uniforms, "Debate Dodgers" scrawled across their chests in the team's iconic script. They're not swinging bats, though. They're performing elegant ballet moves, gracefully evading their challengers, who are dressed as football players, lunging and diving, trying desperately to tackle them.

Jarrett Keohokalole goes for Case. Gary Cordery charges at Green, whose spinning leg goes "bonk!" into the Republican gubernatorial hopeful's head. Daniel Anthony and Della Belatti both try to tackle Kawakami at the same time, from opposing directions, but he leaps out of their grasp and the two "bonk!" heads. The Dodgers keep dancing, untouched, unbothered, gliding past every attempt to force a confrontation.

The image is silly, but it's also an indictment of how elections are conducted by powerful candidates in Hawaiʻi—and increasingly, across the country.
