October is #HealthLiteracyMonth! 💙 We listened to teens and the adults who support them to uncover real barriers to care and the health literacy skills young people need. Those findings are shaping the EmpowerU curriculum. Follow Influents to learn more. #HealthLiteracyMonth #PublicHealth #Parenting

Infographic for October Health Literacy Month summarizing focus groups with teens in urban, suburban, and rural communities. Top barriers to accessing health care or improving health literacy: not sure how to ask for help, feeling judged or not taken seriously, not trusting providers, cost and insurance concerns, and feeling uncomfortable talking about health concerns. Top topics teens want to know more about: mental health and when to get help, suicide prevention and support, coping strategies for stress and emotions, healthy lifestyles (nutrition, sleep, physical activity), and puberty and sexual health. Highest perceived needs for teens in rural communities: more local providers and services, lower transportation and travel costs, practical information about healthy living and self-advocacy, mental health, sexual health, and substance use education, and more comprehensive health education, including puberty. Footer: This work is supported by the U.S. Department of Education, EmpowerU.Infographic titled ‘Healthcare Provider Perspectives’ for October Health Literacy Month, summarizing focus groups with doctors, therapists, nurses, social workers, behavioral health providers, and other health professionals about adolescent health literacy. Biggest problems teens face when trying to get health care: not knowing where to go or how to start, difficulty navigating the health care system, cost and insurance concerns, transportation and lack of local services, and fear of judgment or not being taken seriously. Topics for teens to know about: mental health and when to get help, sexual and reproductive health, substance use and harm reduction, preventive care and routine health visits, and healthy lifestyle habits. Unique perspectives from providers serving rural areas: limited availability of local providers and services, transportation and travel costs as added barriers, a greater need for practical information about local resources, the importance of telehealth and online options, and additional stigma and privacy concerns in smaller communities. Footer: This work is supported by the U.S. Department of Education, EmpowerUInfographic titled ‘Stigma Around Accessing Health Care’ for October Health Literacy Month, summarizing focus groups with doctors, therapists, nurses, school professionals, and other health professionals. Why teens might feel judged or embarrassed: worry about what peers, parents, or school staff might think, fear of being seen as weak or overreacting, discomfort talking about sensitive topics, past negative experiences or feeling dismissed, and cultural or community beliefs that discourage seeking care. What would help teens feel less judged: respectful providers who listen, privacy and confidentiality, a safe and nonjudgmental environment, providers who understand teen experiences, and access to trusted adults and youth-friendly services. Reducing stigma can strengthen health literacy. When teens feel safe, respected, and supported, they may be more likely to ask questions, share health concerns, seek help when needed, understand their care and options, and build confidence advocating for their health.
