Encounters

A creak where there shouldn’t be one. Her hand reaches for her heart, to calm it perhaps, and encounters the hard shell of her cellphone in the inside pocket of her hoodie. Just the feel of it is reassuring.

Alrighty Then, I Won’t

After a long walk, I come to a heavy chain-linked fence with an enormous “Do not cross” sign, red on yellow. Beyond, a huge house,and a gleaning hummer. I sit down by the fence, unpack my sandwich, and begin to munch.
