"A tall heron stands poised in the shallow water, its long neck lifted like a question mark against the pale sky. The bird’s slender legs disappear into the rippled surface of a tidal pool, where the water is so thin it looks brushed across the sand like a sheet of glass. Around the heron, several smaller shorebirds scatter across the scene—gulls with rounded bodies and bright, alert postures. They stand on patches of wet sand and wade through the reflective water, their shapes forming a loose ring around the larger bird. The background rises gently into a strip of dry beach, then into a fringe of tall grasses that sway at the edge of the frame.
