A visit to the zoo wouldn't be complete without stopping by the ground squirrels. These cute little animals are always ready for excellent photo opportunities even without long focal lengths. A must-see and my favorites for the 70-200mm lens.

The Columbian ground squirrel is a stout rodent, measuring about 13 to 16 inches long, with a relatively short, bushy tail. It has dense fur that is a mottled gray and brown along its back, with distinct reddish-tan or bronze fur on its nose, face, chest, and legs. You can also recognize it by the pale beige rings of fur around its eyes.

At North Cascades National Park, I encountered the roundest dang Cascade Golden-mantled Ground Squirrel that I've ever seen. Look at this magnificent creature!
